Baby elephant found dead in Mondulkiri wildlife sanctuary
9 January 2018
On January 8, 2018, the Facebook page of the Mondulkiri Environment Department reported the discovery of a baby elephant corpse at Lapak Village, Sre Khtom Commune, Keo Seima District, Mondul Kiri Province. The small body was found partially buried in a pit of 1m wide by about 70cm deep.
The authorities from the Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary say that the death may have occurred as recently as the night of 7 January. They estimate the age of the elephant as approximately 1 year old. The body has been transported to headquarters for veterinary inspection and post mortum, then will be taken to Phnom Penh to study.
[Edit] Cause of death: Law of the jungle. The little elephant trod on a termite's nest which caved in trapping his hind legs. Impossible to escape.
