New Road Rules... Passenger Helmets

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

You have to remember that in the course of evolution Khmer skulls have developed to be much harder that genetically inferior western dudes. Therefore when they fall off their motos their heads do not break and they simply bounce back up and continue their journey.

Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

Police should be selling helmet, every times you are caught without one, they sell you one, making some profit of course.
Now the local has a helmet they can wear, and the money is not a bribe.

Haha. my Cambodian mate loves this. he said where he lives its more dangerous to drive with your lights on cos the motorbike thieves can see you and stop you to nick the bike :-) he also laughs at helmets. "f I don't wear a helmet I die quickly. if I wear a helmet and live my family will be bankrupted by medical bills. better to die quick"

Helmets are probably not that effective above walkingpace anyway. Most will not past even the lowest bicycle helmet test at home, They don't fit because they have one helmet for everyone in the family and the straps are shit so they fall off in a spill anyway, if they got them done up. They are useful for jamming your phone in as a Khmer hands free kit though.

Don’t give them any ideas.....

However if they sell them a helmet they are taking potential repeat customers (bribes) away.

The police were selling helmets as an alternative to the fine when the law came in in some places but they wanted $5 or $10 for a helmet that is $2 to $5 in the market. the new traffic law has also started a new crime, stealing helmets! BTW the police are now enforcing passenger helmets on sihanouk, monivong and norodom, much to the surprise of the locals. Even saw a policeman slap a kid on the head as he dodged rounds the copper
