- Giuseppe Nicolosi, an Australian national convicted of raping a 5-year-old girl, died from a chronic disease on Sunday while serving an eight-year sentence in Phnom Penh’s Prey Sar prison.

Sorn Keo, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry’s Department of Prisons, said the prisoner developed a rash from the disease and was transferred to the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital on December 1.

“Having seen his picture, it was scary,” Keo said. Nicolosi had served more than five years in Prey Sar, he added.

Nicolosi was arrested on suspicion of having sex with a 5-year-old in Siem Reap province’s Sala Kamroeuk commune in 2010 and sentenced the following year.

The victim retracted her complaint in 2012 following the Siem Reap Provincial Court trial. Nicolosi appealed, claiming he was a victim of a false accusation and police corruption, but the Appeal Court upheld the eight-year sentence.

The body will remain at the hospital while the Australian Embassy informs Nicolosi’s family. The embassy could not be reached for comment.

Cambodia's harshest jail claims life of Australian sex offender
- A convicted Australian child sex offender has died after spending seven years in Cambodia's harshest jail.

Giuseppe Nicolosi, 61, who insisted he was innocent of raping a four year-old girl, was pronounced dead in a state-run hospital in the Cambodian capital on Monday.

Nicolosi was serving an eight-year jail sentence in Prey Sar on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, where basic medical needs are unavailable.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said consular assistance was being proved to the family of an Australian man who died in Cambodia.

A five-year-old girl, who a court found had been sexually assaulted by an Australian man in 2010, had withdrawn her complaint, a court prosecutor said yesterday.
Giuseppe Nicolosi, 57, appeared in the Court of Appeal yesterday to fight a conviction and eight-year jail term for having sex with the girl.

Presiding judge Plang Samnang said Nicolosi was charged with buying child prostitution in Siem Reap town.

“He had given her 2,000 riel to [have sex with him],” he said. “He also licked the victim’s vagina.”

But deputy prosecutor Hean Rith said the victim had withdrawn her lawsuit. “Based on . . . the victim’s answer as well as the official examination of the victim’s vagina, issued by the provincial hospital, the victim was never abused by or had sex with Nicolosi,” he said. “I would drop the charge.”
Nicolosi denied the charge.“I did not have sex with the victim. I am innocent,” he said.
He had been a victim of police corruption, his lawyer said.

Charge of an Australian national paying for sex with a minor require further investigation in light of the five-year-old alleged victim retracting her accusation, the Appeals Court announced yesterday.

Presiding Judge Plang Samnang said there was inadequate evidence against Giuseppe Nicolosi, 57, but that further investigation was necessary because “the court suspected that the victim reversed her answers and withdrew her complaint because she or her parents had received benefits from the suspect”.

An Australian national convicted of purchasing sex from a five-year-old in 2010 had his final hearing in his appeal yesterday, a hearing that could secure his release, with the prosecution also calling for the charge to be dropped.

The defendant, Giuseppe Nicolosi, 57, was originally sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment in 2011.
But there were problems with the case then, and those could factor into the Appeal Court’s decision. The victim recanted her original complaint following the Siem Reap Provincial Court trial.

Another one with "licking of the vagina". Should we question all accusations that include this? That teacher had the same charge. No sniffing of pants in this one. Well, he's dead now, case closed.

He either REALLY pissed someone off, or had a known history of suspicious behavior. You know how nosy people are here.

They'd know if he went out late at night, tried to meet moms and young children, went to dubious neighborhoods, etc.

So, I think if he did or he didn't, he probably *was trying to* solicit underage gals.

I would like to burn his image in effigy tonight ...
