I'd like to celebrate this as much as possible. :beer1:
I was under the impression that Sunday public holidays moved to Monday, but apparently the kids are going to school.

In his message on the occasion of the Human Rights Day this year, the UN Secretary-General António Guterres said: “Human rights are the foundation of peaceful societies and sustainable development. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights establishes the equality and dignity of every person. It makes governments responsible for ensuring people can enjoy their inalienable rights and freedoms.”

So, human rights is just something these guys made up then.

Tuesday, 10 December, is Human Rights Day. It is still a public holiday in Cambodia this year, but this will probably be the last time that people will get the day off work.

Human Rights Day celebration to focus on the role of youths
The United Nation Human Rights in Cambodia will mark this year’s Human Rights Day by focusing on the leadership roles of youths, which some civil society claim remains restricted.

UN Human Rights in Cambodia, in partnership with the Cambodian Human Rights Committee, the UN Country Team, and the European Union Delegation will organise the event under the theme “Youth standing up for human rights” at the National Olympic Stadium tomorrow.

A UN statement released yesterday said that democracy is about people and their equal public participation which enables the advancement of all human rights.

“It plays a crucial role in the promotion of democracy, the rule of law, social inclusion and economic development,” it said. “It is essential for reducing inequalities and social conflict.”

The statement noted that the participation is central for empowering individuals and groups, and is one of the core elements of the human rights-based approach aimed at eliminating marginalisation and discrimination.

Toem Malai, Cambodia Youth Network president, yesterday said that the celebration of Human Rights Day will provide opportunity for youths to participate in the development of society, but there still remain restrictions on the activities of some of them.

“We have seen there still remain restrictions on activities by youths, especially by politicians,” he said, noting that youths from the ruling CPP have full freedom to carry out programmes while those who promote social justice and human rights protection do not.

Soeng Senkaruna, spokesman at human rights group Adhoc, yesterday said he is concerned that some youths do not participate in efforts to develop society because they are either involved with drugs or too busy spending their time on leisure activities.

I reserve my human right to ignore human rights day.

Rights Day forum denied in Sihanoukville
Voun Dara | Publication date 08 December 2019 | 23:35 ICT
The Preah Sihanouk provincial administration last Saturday denied the request of land communities for a public location in the province to celebrate International Human Rights Day 2019 as the administration had already held forums to discuss land issues.

However, the land community representatives said they would still hold the forum.

The objection letter from the Preah Sihanouk provincial administration informed citizens who have been involved in land disputes that it does not allow the organisation of the public forum.

This was because previously, the provincial administration had held dissemination and consultation forums of town, district and commune councils.

It said public forums in communes and dialogues with civil societies were organised in the province twice a year and concerned land disputes and other issues at the request of the public.

On December 3, representatives from 11 land communities in Preah Sihanouk province submitted a letter and invited the provincial governor to celebrate the 71st International Human Rights Day on Monday.

The letter said 250 people who had been involved in land disputes and hold permanent addresses in Stung Hav and Prey Nop districts as well as Sihanoukville, will participate in the forum.

Cambodia’s symbolic shunning of Human Rights Day
South East Asia Globe • December 10, 2019

This year will be the last in which Human Rights Day will be marked in Cambodia after the government's decision to remove it from its list of public holidays. Chak Sopheap, Executive Director of the Cambodian Center for Human Rights, reflects on this symbolic gesture and what it means for rights in the Kingdom
By Chak Sopheap

On 10 December the United Nations celebrates Human Rights Day, commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 – the first international document declaring that human rights are inalienable, applying to everyone by virtue of their humanity regardless of their race, colour, religion, sex, language, political opinion, national origin, property, birth or status.

Every year on 10 December, Cambodia marks this occasion by granting a public holiday to its citizens. However, this year will be the last such time. Human Rights Day is on the list of those public holidays to be dropped next year – a fact that is somewhat reflective of the current attitude of the government to the human rights situation in Cambodia. As we celebrate this day, it is therefore a good time to be critical and to remind ourselves of the importance of the values that Universal Declaration on Human Rights embodies and their important place in Cambodian society and history.

In 1991, Cambodia signed the Paris Peace Agreements, bringing an end to decades of conflict and laying the framework for a political settlement rooted in respect for human rights and the rule of law. The agreements set out key principles for governance that were reflected in the Constitution of Cambodia. However, somewhere along the way the state stopped translating these principles into action; the result being that Cambodian citizens do not live the reality promised by the Agreements.

Countries that make a big deal about human rights, with days off and other baubles for the hoi polloi, are usually the ones to watch out for. Chances are they have some previous in this department.

A bit like countries that call themselves Peoples Democratic Republics which are frequently grotesque dictatorships.

My Dad used to tell me that an honest man never feels the need, nor even the inclination. to proclaim his honesty in everyday life. If someone keeps telling you that they are, chances are they are not.
