2014 was a good year for ricochets.
They are now an almost extinct species, along with oxygen-thieving trees and people who cut off their own heads and put them in suitcases..

Re: Cock-fighting venue raided and closed down
High officials on the run are in the news. One down, on the personal orders of the PM.
Relative of HE held over cockfighting
6 December 2017
- Kandal Provincial Court has charged a cockfighting ringleader and relative of Prime Minister HE with illegal gambling, also convicting 64 people who bet on his games.
Thai Phany, who is known as “Thai Mab”, is the son-in-law of Hun San, the elder brother of Mr HE. He has been placed in pre-trial detention after turning himself in to police following the Prime Minister’s call for his arrest.
Court spokesman Sam Rithyveasna said Mr Phany had been charged with running illegal gambling rings.
“He is now in prison for pretrial detention,” Mr Rithyveasna said.
Prison officer Chem Vanny said court director Hok Vanthyna decided to charge Mr Phany and ordered his detention.
Police on Monday raided two huge cockfighting rings in Takeo and Kandal provinces, owned by Mr Phany. Officers arrested more than 100 people in the bust, but some escaped as they were being driven to the police station.
Mr HE ordered the crackdown on the cockfighting rings belonging to his brother’s son-in-law. “Takeo and Kandal provinces have to take strict measures against Hun San’s son-in-law,” Mr HE said.
“If he fights back, they can shoot him dead instantly.” ...

If you are curious about cockfights, never seen one, and want to see what the fuss is about, here is a short video of a local affair - a bit of dirt, a couple of cocks, and a bunch of guys betting. It's not very exciting.

I saw them in Cajun country in Louisiana about fifty years ago. Not terribly exciting if you didn't have money on the line, but it beat either going to mass or watching summer reruns on TV.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

When Julius Caesar landed in Britain in 55BC, he was impressed that no-one ate chickens, they just used them for fighting.

Interesting cp. In Cajun country the losers were eaten with copious amounts of Dixie beer.

[ Cops Eat Chickens in Bid to Deter Cock Fighting ]Re: Cock-fighting venue raided and closed down
You can't make this up.
28 DEC 2017
Can't copy and paste the Times of India article (link below), but basically ...
- The cops ate 92 roosters seized Dec. 4th at an illegal gambling ring.
- The big guy's nephew-in-law was involved.
- (This raises eyebrows) He is AUSTRALIAN-Khmer, you know how subversive them Aussies are, haha.
I think this is simple justice, dealt out by country people to country people.
Hundreds and hundreds of hours are poured into rearing these valuable fighters. To have them gobbled up is heart-breaking to fighting cock breeders.
Another benefit is that the police is now "incentivized" to find more rooster gambling rings, they've now got a taste of justice. And morale and health is higher as well. They can find and "eat off of" criminal excess. I think they are especially adamant in this case because of the close relation to the big guy.
Lastly, the huge number of violators need not be punished. It's the BREEDERS that FEEL THE BITE! Quite a targeted reaction / punishment if you ask me. Simple village folk ignored and told to find something else. Fair enough?
Ok, you might feel this is a token "enforcement of the law." But I think the nephew-in-law was guilty of being "naughty" (haven't we all) AND he IS subversive Australian-Khmer, which seems to be a trending topic in Cambodia.
Beware Floridians, Australian-Khmers, bogans, etc., haha!

Melvin Udall: Never, never, interrupt me, okay?
Not if there's a fire, not even if you hear the sound of a thud from my home and one week later there's a smell coming from there that can only be a decaying human body and you have to hold a hanky to your face because the stench is so thick that you think you're going to faint.
Even then, don't come knocking...Not for ANY reason.
