Locking up babies: Cambodia drug war ensnares children
by Holly Robertson
4 Dec 2017
Phnom Penh, Cambodia - For the first 18 months of his life, the only home Sopheary's son knew was a cramped prison cell.
"The kids would try to shake the window and the door to get out but they couldn't, so they would cry," said Sopheary, whose name has been changed to protect her family's privacy. "It was very chaotic."
Three months pregnant when she was swept up in a drug raid on a karaoke parlour in July 2015, Sopheary denied knowledge of the methamphetamine found on her client but was sentenced to three years' imprisonment, reduced to two on appeal.
It was inevitable the baby she was carrying would be born during her sentence. And, with her relatives unable to care for him, his first - and developmentally crucial - months were spent in an adult prison that has become increasingly crowded because of a major government crackdown on drugs.
When he was born, "he was so small, like a monkey", Sopheary told Al Jazeera. She blamed his low birth weight on receiving inadequate nutrition from her food rations during her pregnancy. And, like other mothers interviewed for this story, she said she was unable to breastfeed so relied on formula provided by a non-governmental organisation...

Re: Cambodia's prison babies, victims of war on drugs
I heard about a case witch make me realy sad to hear it, because i know the couple from holidays in cambodia and the luck is not realy following them.....
If the police find some cristal (5-6 small packs) and the smoking instruments for it in the room of a khmer girl, who didn't know where the stuff is coming from and she had a negative drug test, how long she will have to go to prison ?

From what they say, the prisons are full, but people are still getting arrested daily, and presumably locked up, for very small amounts of drugs.
Sorry for your friend, but getting busted with 5-6 packets is more than unlucky, looks like dealing any way you look at it.

it seem to be from guys in the neigborhood. They come in and out in the room. There was a small bag with all inside: Drucg, pipe, scale, etc. (you are right: It's looking like business)
She says, it's not from her. But I'm not sure, that the police is interested to find out the truth, because they already find her. Perhaps it's enough for them: Case closed. Unfortunatly I don't have more details.
I don't know every detail, but the take her to prison. What is comming next ? Wait 6 months to see a juge ? and what senstence come in case like that ? 2-3 years ?

The prisons are packed because of the crackdown on drugs that started Jan 1st. Having a scales is not going to go in her favor. If she has some money she might get out sooner but 2-3 years is realistic depending on the weight/ number of packages she was caught with.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
