A New, Cheap Taxi Service Starts in Phnom Penh (Taxi Rouge)

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. And it creates an industry instead of a novelty. If a town has 1 guy running 1 car as a taxi, the first thing on people's minds isn't "take the taxi". but if you have cabs all over the place taking a taxi becomes the typical behaviour, and so all of the companies profit from it.

I have to admit, I noticed that as odd when I first saw the name.

Just odd.

Can't be intentional, but I think a billion other names would have been better than a name that seems very similar to the group held responsible for the biggest genocide here.

This, in the country that celebrates its civil war and genocide with a rifle range on the killing fields, and cows that go bang with RPGs.

It's a cab, and it's red. Just happens that the company is using French.
I know of a photo agency that is called "Melon Rouge" and a now-defunct restaurant that was called "la Voile Rouge."

Keen observation.

Nobody has claimed it was on purpose, just odd.

Are you saying that you didn't link that association together at all when you first read it?

French is my native language so it didn't strike me as such. Just like a restaurant's name in Khmer such as Neak Krohom (red dragon) wouldn't automatically make the association with Khmer Krohom.

That makes sense. I guess being a native English speaker, the first things i would think of are Khmer Rouge and Mulan Rouge. And being in Cambodia, you can guess which one my mind thought of first.

The obvious question of the day:

Well, anyone taken one yet?

Can you just flag down a Taxi Rouge (or any other taxi company) car? Or do you have to book?

If I were back living in PP (a possibility this year), the burgeoning taxi industry would remove one item from the list of Things That Annoy in PP. At night, it's safer and more secure to be in a taxi, not to mention more comfortable and cheap!

I just hope the drivers know where they're going!

I taken taxi twice in back in 2011; it was a bit expensive for my budget then but the drivers seem to know where they were going. Just a guess, when waving for a taxi, I dont think taxi drivers in PP will stop at places they deem unsafe i.e. no streetlights or off the main road especially when you are Asian looking.

Anyway, which retard came up with the name Taxi Rouge. I suppose he thought it appeals to foreign passengers, but I think not! "Hello and welcome to Taxi Rouge, hope you will have a safe journey," yea sure buddy!
