Fake cops in Thailand

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Fake cops in Thailand

Post by Soi Dog »

This is just one case (and maybe only a drug mule), but stories of fake police are not uncommon there. The real Thai cops are bad enough, but encountering fake cops has got to be a nightmare. I think a good policy is to always assume any cop who tries to mess with you for no reason is a phony and fight like hell if they try to slap handcuffs on you. I'd rather sit in a Thai jail being charged with assaulting genuine police than fall victim to God-knows-what fate can come from being led away by a police-impersonating criminal.

A 37 year old man, who posed as a Police Captain, was caught with 1,800 Yabba Tablets, a Police Uniform and hundreds of fake Police ID cards in East Pattaya on Thursday afternoon.
A press conference was held to announce the arrest of Khun Ponpipat, a Cousin of a senior local government official from Banglamung. He was arrested close to his place of residence which was subsequently searched, uncovering police uniforms, a gun, fake Police ID cards and the drugs.

Even during his arrest he informed officers he was a Police Captain at Banglamung Police Station and officers should be very careful. Despite this, he was arrested and was later questioned when he revealed he has been drug dealing for 8 months and would purchase Yabba Tablets from a dealer based in Chiang Rai Province in the North of Thailand in batches of 2,000 tablets.

For the last 3 months he has transported the drugs in his car to Pattaya and would wear a Police Uniform which avoided any problems at checkpoints he would encounter during his journey. He was able to reproduce the ID cards through information he found on the internet.

The purpose of his alleged criminal actions was to raise 1.7 Million Baht so he could pay off a loan he had taken out using a piece of land he owned as security.

Khun Ponpipat was charged with possession with intent to supply a class 1 drug, possession of an unregistered firearm and impersonating a Royal Thai Police Officer and he currently awaits Trial.

Another one arrested:
PATTAYA – March 31,2015 [Pattaya Daily News]; Pol.Lt.Col. Phasawas Sirinopphakhun (Inquiry official of Pattaya city police station, Chon Buri province) mobilized police to arrest Mr. Prasonchai Phrakorbsanti, aged 31,from Moo 3 Tambon Krajai, Amphur Pa Tie, Yasothon province, at a restaurant in Soi AR, central Pattaya, Moo 9, Tambon Nong Prue, Amphur Banglamung. He was arrested with a mobile phone which had a picture of him dressed in a police uniform.

Pol.Lt.Col. Phasawat Sirinopphakhun said that they knew that Mr. Prasonchai had acted like a police officer to extort money and to eat for free in various restaurants in Amphur Banglamung, Chon Buri province. He also told the police that he worked for Pattaya city police station and if the patrollers wanted money he would take them to arrest drug addicts in area of Amphur Banglamung in order to extort money from them. Therefore, the police made a sting operation that leaded to the successful arrest of Mr. Prasonchai.

Upon questioning his wife she said that they had lived together for 5-6 years and she said he is not a police man. During the time that she had stayed with him he told her that he was a Lieutenant police officer and worked for the Narcotics Suppression, Division 2, which he had just been promoted. He also told his friends the same lie and they had celebrated his new rank.

Initially, the police sent Mr. Prasonchai to the inquiry official of Pattaya city police station in order to be prosecuted with allegation of impersonating a police officer and extorting money.

Thai Man Stabbed By 3 Men

PATAYA-25th April
Pol.Lt.Manot Thipwet-inspector of Bang Lamung police station- was notified that a man had been stabbed in a staff room of a Pattaya engineering division. After notification the police officer rushed to the crime scene.

At the scene the officers found a bed which was covered with blood stains and the room had also been ransacked. The injured man had already been sent to hospital and was identified as Mr.Arnon Wilanan aged 29, he had been stabbed twice in his back, once in the stomach and once in the right ear.

Upon questioning eyewitnesses they revealed that 3 Thai men went and knocked on the door of the room and Mr.Arnon answered the door and they told him they were police subordinators, they then pushed him back into the room and locked the door. The eyewitnesses then heard screaming and Mr Arnon was shouting for help. The men then came out of the room and quickly fled the on a Honda Wave motorcycle leaving the injured man in the room.

The police expected that it may be a personal issue; however, they are now hunting for the attackers so they can be prosecuted according to Thai law.

Police move most of the yabba in Thailand. The military moves a lot too. Expect more nefarious behavior by the police. The Army has been expropriating or shutting down many of the police's traditional cash cows since the coup.

Seems to me the BIB would want to nip this sort of thing in the bud quick-fast, or they lose all legitimacy and credibility.
