She's actually coming to work (probably intern) with a very well established, high-end training salon that is run by a good friend of mine who owns signature salons in the US. Very definitely not a faith-based organisation, and very definitely doing great things for highly at-risk people.

Without having read the article - as I'm becoming allergic to humblebragging - it's interesting to see how this omits the above.

Edit: Okay, I read the article, and encourage others to do so before commenting (as I should have).

Many girls working in the "sex industry" in Phnom Penh have work skills such as sewing or hairdressing already. Over the years I've known quite a few hairdressers in Phnom Penh. In the evening, they either freelanced in the old Martini Bar or worked in hostess bars. Reason, they could not make enough money hairdressing to live. Similarly I knew quite a few seamstress's in the same boat, that would freelance at the "Holiday" at weekends to make enough money to survive. Numerous girls have also quit jobs in the garment factory for better pay in the bars. Generally what is needed is better pay not better skills.

Here's an extract from an article - Prostitution in Victorian England –
The 1851 census estimated that 30% of the entire workforce was women, but the jobs they held were some of the worst of the worst. Some of those jobs would have been breeding grounds for future prostitutes. Henry Mayhew saw the greatest cause of prostitution as “the low rate of wages that the female classes receive, in return for the most arduous and wearisome of labour.

Seems that not a lot has changed.

If only there was an established and functioning western-class formal apprenticeship program for hairdressers in Cambodia. Oh, wait... that's what this guy is offering.

Youth learn new skills in hairdressing programme
14 November 2017
Every young person has the right to learn new skills in a safe, supportive environment, and education is one of the most wide-reaching and beneficial investments in children’s futures. It delivers the opportunity to gain essential work and life skills, lifts people out of poverty and contributes to empowerment and better health.

Over the course of a year, WELLA-UNICEF Making Waves will provide at least 800 young people throughout Cambodia with vocational training, including hairdressing and life skills education, working with NGO partners Friends International in Phnom Penh and some provinces.

A representative to UNICEF Cambodia, Debora Comini, said that, “We are incredibly proud to be working with Wella to empower young people with life-changing vocational training and skills.”

The programme supports young people from the poorest and most vulnerable communities; 500 vulnerable children and adolescents will be reached with child protection services, and at least 2,200 children and adolescents with life skills, to help reduce vulnerability...
