Getting married to a Khmer

Post by pczz »

Been chasing around trying to find the easiest way for my friend to marry his khmer girlfriend. leaving the jokes apart here is a fe wrinkles.
Trip to the MFA resulted in them telling me it takes 6 or 7 moths and you have yo pay the MFA $400 and $350 to the Ministry of the interior. No idea where the figures came from but he did offer to do it for $1400 in 4 months. And of course you must be under 50 and have an income of $2500 a month. Probably bullshit but I have heard the same prices from other people so they are getting away with it. In my friedns case the probelm is he cannot hang around for that long, and he needs the marriage certificate for visa purposes by February.
Most other places require you to get a marital status certificate stamped by the MFA but they will not do it because they do not want Cambodians getting married outside the country.
Quick internet search for easy places to get married threw up a few possibilities but they all wanted some paperwork that was awkward to get, were stroppy about visas or just took too long. Then I found about Aero island in Denmark. You can get legally hitched there with only your passport and your Khmer girlfriends passport. No certificate of marital status, no birth certificate and it can be arranged at only 8 days notice for 800 euro or 500 euro if you are not in a rush.
Ok so Denmark is a long way but if you are european and take your girlfriend home for visits anyway or you are over 50 or do not have the income its an option. Schengen visas are not hard to get. Company I found was called gettingmarriedindenmark.com

Hong Kong is easiest followed by Singapore, KL then possibly Denmark but it sounds like getting the Shenzhen visa will be too much for your "friend" to deal with if you and him think getting married here is too much hassle.

Why are you making excruciating trips to ministries if your friend is the one getting married?

Bangkok hooker we already tried Honk Kong and Singapore and both told us they require police checks and certificate of no impediment stamped by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. MFA will not stamp this as marriages outside Cambodia are not recognized. Spoken to 3 different people there, same story.

Areo island only requires your passport nad 3 days notice if you use a wedding planner.

And the reason I am going to the ministries is because she is in Europe with her fiancé at the moment. Schengen visa is no problem. They have to do it for free in 3 days because her son has a European passport. Far more hassle to get a visa for HK or Singapore.

What are you his bitch?

They've already sorted a Shenzhen visa plus EU passport so why ask you (when you give incorrect info about marrying in HK or Singapore) to sort out a Khmer marriage certificate.

Sorry Phuket richerd but you are WRONG. here is the reply from the singapore marriage registry. They require the certificate of no impediment and you cannot get that in Cambodia. i already been to the MFA and a lawyer. Cambodia does not recognise marriages of cambodian nationals of outside cambodia and will not provide this documet as amtter of policy. if you can find a government official who is prepared to do it please post his/her contact details

Thank you for your email. Please see below on the requirements and documents required to register a civil marriage in Singapore.

d) Letter/Certificate of no impediment issued by the respective Embassies or relevant Government authorities to show that there is no impediment for the parties to marry under the laws of their respective home countries. The document should include the particulars of bride and groom (name, date of birth, nationality, religion, passport number). If the document is in a foreign language, we will require the document to be translated to English. The original document and the English translated copy must be authenticated by either:
(i) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your respective countries and further endorsed by the Singapore Consulate in that country; or
(ii) Your respective countries’ Embassies in Singapore.

For your easy reference on items (d) and (f), do refer to the documents below which each of you will be required to produce.
Groom
- Letter/Certificate of No Impediment issued by the United Kingdom Embassy or relevant Government authorities in the United Kingdom.
- Marriage Record Search, Single or Marital Status Letter from Greece and Cambodia.
Bride
- Letter/Certificate of No Impediment issued by the Cambodian Embassy or relevant Government authorities in the Cambodia.
* Documents which are in foreign languages (other than English, Mandarin, Tamil or Malay/Bahasa Indonesia) should be translated to English language by a Certified Translator (certified by the respective Embassy).
