PHNOM PENH: Cambodian Transport Minister Sun Chanthol has told officials he wants a planned water taxi service operating on the Tonle Sap and Tonle Bassac rivers by April.
Mr Chanthol said in a ministry Facebook post on Wednesday that a waterway service for commuters would ease traffic congestion in Phnom Penh and help reduce the number of traffic accidents.
He wants the general department of transport to ensure the service is launched in Phnom Penh and Kandal province to the southeast before the Khmer New Year in April, the Khmer Times reported.
“Each docking station must connect with public bus stops to make it easy for passengers,” Mr Chanthol said.
Earlier this year, then Phnom Penh governor Pa Socheatvong confirmed the water taxi service will be run by City Hall and cost an estimated US$22 million.
The service will run on 25 kilometres of waterways from the Prek Phnov bridge on the northern outskirts of Phnom Penh south to Takhmao City in Kandal province via the Tonle Sap and Tonle Bassac rivers.
Under the plan, 20 passenger boats will be used for the service, running four times daily. Each boat will carry up to 90 passengers and travel at a maximum 30 kilometres per hour. There will be nine water-taxi service stations on the waterway

Re: Water taxi service for Phnom Penh by April
The idea is good. They've been talking about it for a while.
BUT... all this, in 5 months ? Boats, boat-stations, and connection to city bus services ?Under the plan, 20 passenger boats will be used for the service, running four times daily. Each boat will carry up to 90 passengers and travel at a maximum 30 kilometres per hour. There will be nine water-taxi service stations on the waterway
Still think its a good idea, but it might take a bit longer than expected. I bet they haven't even ordered the boats yet.He wants the general department of transport to ensure the service is launched in Phnom Penh and Kandal province to the southeast before the Khmer New Year in April, the Khmer Times reported.
“Each docking station must connect with public bus stops to make it easy for passengers,” Mr Chanthol said.

Thats going to be fun. Chroy Vangar choked in gridlock on the bridge, Naga ferry choked with about 5 or 6 boats already using it, plus the government likes shutting Preah Sihanoukdown for official things all the time and Sihanouk is choked in rush hour so you cant get to the bloody ferry. Good idea but its goingto need some proper traffic enforcemnt like the idiots who block 51 and sihanouk traffic lights triple parking to get their passport photos

Well this jetty at Takhmau only lasted till the first big flow of water. It was never used, so must have been a test for the real one still to come.

Re: Water taxi service for Phnom Penh by April
This is much more vague than the announcement by the Ministry. All is still in the project stage, and they say six terminals will be constructed, with a POSSIBLE total of 15 in the future.
Transport Ministry to launch water taxi service
3 January 2017
- The Transport Ministry and Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP) are looking to launch a ferry service by the Khmer New Year in mid-April, connecting Prek Pnov in the north of Phnom Penh to Kandal province’s Takhmao City via six initial terminals, the ministry said yesterday.
Va Sim Sorya, a ministry spokesman, said six floating terminals were now being built and would later be transported to the docking points.
The six terminals would be in or near Prek Pnov, Russey Keo, the Night Market, Areiy Ksatr, Phrea Monivong and Takmao, but exact sites had not yet been selected, Sorya said.
“We expect that civil servants and workers at some factories [near the river] will use the service, and we hope it will help to reduce traffic congestion,” he said.
There are no details yet on transportation schedules, price, or the number of passengers each ferry will be able to carry, Sorya said, though he added that PPAP had confirmed that it would have two ferries available for the initial operation.
According to a post on the ministry’s Facebook page on Monday, the project includes plans to eventually expand the number of terminals to 15...
