Sri Lankan arrested for trying to smuggle 1kg of gold in his rectum
Ouch.
25 September 2017
- A Sri Lankan man who raised suspicion by the way he kept looking around in an airport departure lounge was found to be carrying nearly 1kg (2.2lb) of gold stashed in his rectum.
The 45-year-old, who was headed for India, was arrested at Colombo airport on Sunday after customs officials noticed “suspicious movements”, said customs spokesman Sunil Jayarathne.
The man was carrying 904.77g of gold worth 4.5m rupees (£22,000), but was freed after a payment of 100,000 rupees, he said. Such methods of smuggling were not unusual, he said.
“The gold was wrapped in plastic bags inserted in to his rectum,” Jayarathne said, adding that there were four bags.

Re: Sri Lankan arrested for trying to smuggle 1kg of gold in his rectum
exactly, duty is small
where as in the 80's the profit was over 10% now its less than 2%
Most gold even than that was smuggled into India ended up in Nepal,( profit 14%)
True story,
in the mid 80-'s, smuggling gold into Nepal was Big business. Many Managi's ( people from Manang valley in Nepal) would travel to HK and take back an average of 1.5 kilos ( they were in 2 tael round bars) 1 tael is about 38 grms
Rather than hold the bars inside the whole trip, they would wait for the Captain to announce that they have begun their decent into KTM. the lucky ones would get to the bathrooms, the others would drop their pants and...
quite funny...

Re: Sri Lankan arrested for trying to smuggle 1kg of gold in his rectum
Not so sure, Jamie, but I heard years ago that citizens from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and a few other countries can only take gold into India in very limited amounts. I don't know how true this is or way it's that way but that's what I once heard.
Re: Sri Lankan arrested for trying to smuggle 1kg of gold in his rectum
1 kg is the limit he can take in to India. The reason he didn't declare it is because of the 13% duty, which on 22,000 quid is about 2.5k. The 100,000 LKR he paid for release is about a 500 quid.

On Sunday, Indian customs at Madurai international airport caught 29 people hiding gold in their rectums on only two flights.
A total of 37 smugglers were discovered by authorities. 8 of them hid the gold in their hand-luggage or children’s pushchairs, whilst the other 29 smugglers opted for rectal concealment.
India’s Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) said the nuggets, which totaled over 10kg (22lb), were confiscated by authorities.
The smugglers were permitted to walk free as no individual was carrying enough to meet the criminal threshold.

In another flight a week ago, Indian customs nabbed $500,000 worth of gold concealed by passengers from Sri Lanka.
India catches 11 smugglers with gold hidden in rectums
AFP•October 11, 2017
Gold smugglers are resorting to increasingly desperate measures to get the metal past customs, Indian officials say, after nearly a dozen people were caught with bullion stashed in their rectums.
India is the world's second-largest consumer of gold and smuggling has been increasing since duties were raised on the precious metal, an essential part of religious festivals and weddings.
Customs officials acting on a tip-off Sunday detained a group of crafty gold mules as their plane from Sri Lanka touched down in the southern city of Madurai.
"Eleven passengers had concealed some 32 to 50 grams (1.1 to 1.8 ounces) each in their rectums. Another 17 had hidden gold in their luggage," a senior Directorate of Revenue Intelligence official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
The value of the haul was more than 30 million rupees ($500,000), he added...
