Siem Reap noodles made with borax.
Noodle makers shut over borax
Two noodle production facilities in Siem Reap province were shut down yesterday after it was found that borax, a prohibited substance, was being used to make the noodles.
Nget Chek, the head of Camcontrol in Siem Reap province, told Khmer Times that the raid was carried out to prevent contaminated goods from affecting people’s health and society as a whole.
He said the noodles were found to contain borax, also known as sodium tetraborate, a chemical agent commonly used to improve elasticity that can be harmful to one’s health when consumed.
“We decided to temporarily close these noodle production facilities after our Camcontrol officials conducted primary tests on the noodles and found they contained borax,” Mr. Chek said, adding that the contaminated noodles were being sold at Siem Reap City’s Old Market.
“The owners of the two production facilities also made a promise to authorities not to make noodles with borax or sell it at the markets anymore.
A Camcontrol official, who requested anonymity, told Khmer Times yesterday: “Over three kilograms of borax substance was confiscated during the operation.”
In July, another noodle production facility in Siem Reap province was shut down by police after finding that borax had been used to make the noodles for nearly five years.

I know some fishermen use formaldehyde to keep fish from spoiling.

Reminds me of the store near my work which decided the best way to destroy the ('Vietnamese' of course) box of plastic noodles they had bought was to gather friends and family in a circle and burn the plastic noodles plus plastic package, giving everyone a good whiff of the fumes.

More than 300 kilos of noodles destroyed
28 September
Siem Reap provincial officers have closed two Chinese noodle shops that were using the banned chemical borax, impounding more than 300 kilos of noodles and ingredients to burn.
Upon inspection on Tuesday, officials found tainted Chinese noodles being sold and traced them back to the two factories that have now been shut down.
The two factories included one that belonged to Lay Kuy, 64, in Ou Ta Prak village, where officers impounded 114 kilos of noodles and 50 kilos of rice flour.
The other location was owned by 70-year-old Bun Tang Our in Kouk Srok village, where officers seized 40 kilos of Chinese noodles, 50 kilos of rice and 22 kilos of flour.
