Cambodian government clampdown on radio stations continues
Anger Mounts as Radio Purge Knocks 19 Stations Off-Air
August 28, 2017
Independent radio producers, managers and listeners said they were angry and confused on Sunday after an Information Ministry crackdown on at least 19 radio stations last week cut off access to programming for millions of potential listeners.
Information Minister Khieu Kanharith last week denied any political motives in the closures, claiming the stations had violated their contracts with the government by overselling programming to outlets like the Voice of Democracy (VOD) as well as U.S.-funded Voice of America (VOA) and Radio Free Asia (RFA)...
[However, VOD, VOA and RFA are still accessible online.]
Managers from at least three more stations, all of which broadcast RFA—Kiri Dang Rek in Oddar Meanchey province, Klang Moeung Radio in Battambang province and Angkor Ratha in Siem Reap province—also said on Sunday they had been ordered off the air on Wednesday and Thursday, though none were clear on the reasons.

Re: Cambodian government clampdown on radio stations continues
4 September 2017
- Two holdout radio stations that continued to air Radio Free Asia and Voice of America programming amid a government crackdown that took at least 19 stations off-air have been banned from airing their broadcasts.
The ban marks the end of the broadcasts of the U.S.-funded outlets in the Cambodian countryside.
Mam Sonando, the owner of Beehive Radio, said he was shocked to receive the information minister’s letter on Sunday prohibiting his radio station from broadcasting two of the only non-government-aligned news outlets in the country.
“All I can do now is follow the order from the ministry,” Mr. Sonando said on Sunday.
Chea Sun Daneth, director of the Women’s Media Center of Cambodia, also received a letter on Sunday and said she would immediately suspend Radio Free Asia (RFA) and Voice of America (VOA) broadcasts...

RFA Closes Phnom Penh Bureau Amid Crackdown
12 September 2017
Radio Free Asia has decided to close its nearly 20-year old bureau in Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh amid a relentless crackdown by Prime Minister HE's authoritarian regime on independent media ahead of critical polls next year, RFA President Libby Liu announced Tuesday.
They had resorted to "false statements" and "increasingly threatening and intimidating rhetoric" about RFA, made mostly through leaked documents on government mouthpiece media and random statements from different ministries, she said.
"After almost 20 years of bringing the Cambodian people independent, reliable and trustworthy news and information from inside the country, Radio Free Asia has regrettably been forced to close its Phnom Penh bureau," Liu said in a statement.
"The government’s relentless crackdown on independent voices in recent weeks has made it impossible to keep the bureau open while guaranteeing the integrity of RFA’s journalistic mission."
Liu stressed however that RFA, which broadcasts into six countries, including North Korea, China, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam, would continue reporting on Cambodia as part of its mission to provide accurate and timely news and information to Asian countries whose governments prohibit access to a free press...
