Garbage dump body; suspect arrested.
Another banal tale of greed, stupidity and total lack of humanity - a jerk with a drug problem decides to solve his debt problem by killing a good friend and selling her motorbike.
According to the police Facebook page, a 20yo man, Yen Sopanha, has been arrested over the murder of a woman whose body was found wrapped in a blanket on a garbage dump.
“The suspect confessed that because he was in debt for $200, and always used drugs, he decided to kill the victim in order to take her property,” read the Facebook post.
The victim was Keo Kanha, 18, who worked at the 55 Entertainment Club in Daun Penh district’s Chaktomuk commune and lived in Prek Tanou village in Meanchey district’s Chak Angre Leu commune.
According to a military police report, Mr. Sopanha and Ms. Kanha had known each other for a long time. On Tuesday, Mr. Sopanha borrowed a house key from his friend who is a house caretaker for a relative and asked his friend if he could use the house to have sex with a woman.
Mr. Sopanha then called Ms. Kanha and asked her to find $30 to get his iPhone back from a pawn shop.
She then went to meet Mr. Sopanha at the Klang Rom Sav market after she left her work place at 4pm and they then went to the house. When they arrived at the house, Mr. Sopanha took some wire and strangled Ms. Kanha and covered her face with a jacket, wrapped her body in a blanket and tied her legs and hands and dumped her at the garbage site.
At 6pm the same day, he took Ms. Kanha’s motorbike to a pawn shop then hung out with his friends before going to sleep at his grandmother’s house on Veng Sreng road for the night.
On Thursday, he fled to Kandal province because he was scared he would be arrested.

Man finds an excuse for downgrading the charge from premeditated murder to 'simple' murder by saying he got very angry with his girlfriend for no reason. Verdict on 8 September.
Man Admits He Killed Girlfriend, Disputes Motives
29 August 2017
- A 26-year-old man on trial for premeditated murder at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Sunday admitted to strangling his girlfriend with electric wire and dumping her body in a trash pile.
Yen Panha said he killed 19-year-old Keo Kanha in Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district in November because she had asked to leave a friend’s house they were visiting.
“I used a lot of drugs,” he said. “At the time, she asked to go back home. I got very angry and then killed her.” Mr. Panha, who has also been charged for drug use, backtracked on his previous police statements that he had plotted to kill his girlfriend after finding out she was cheating on him.
He said police did not read aloud the testimony before forcing him to sign it. His lawyer, Mon Vimean Champa, asked the court to downgrade the charge to murder as a result...

UPDATE: Sentence Appeal
The murder suspect was arrested in 2017.
March 7, 2023
Man seeks reduced jail term for murdering girlfriend
A man accused of murdering his girlfriend requested the Supreme Court to reduce his sentence from 30 to 15 years in jail during a hearing on his appeal yesterday.
The accused Yen Sopanha, 33, killed girlfriend Keo Kanha, 19, then stole her luxury motorbike and mobile phone on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, in Sen Sok district, in 2016.
The victim was working with a nightclub in Sen Sok district and living in Meanchey district’s Chak Angre Leu commune.
During his appeal hearing yesterday, Sopanha admitted to committing the offence. He said the incident happened due to drug abuse and he did not kill her intentionally.
Sopanha added that he regretted his mistake and said that he is now a changed man who will not repeat his mistake or commit any other crime again.
“The 30-year-sentence given by the lower court is very high and I request the Supreme Court to reduce my sentence to 15 years so that I will be able to work to support my parents,” he said.
Presiding Judge Khim Ponn said that Sopanha was sentenced on September 8, 2017 by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court to 30 years in prison.
The municipal court also ordered him to pay $5,000 in compensation to the victim’s family.
He was charged with premeditated murder under Article 200 of the Criminal Code.
