Cassava under threat
Drought and pests could lead to food shortages...
http://www.theguardian.com/global-devel ... ate-changeClimate change and globalisation are fuelling an explosion in the pests and diseases that afflict south-east Asia’s cassava crops, threatening a multi-billion dollar industry and the staple food of millions of people, a report warns.
Cassava, which is originally from South America, is now south-east Asia’s third largest source of calories after rice and maize. An estimated 40 million people in the area depend on the plant for their livelihoods and the crop forms the basis of a $5bn (£3.5bn) regional market in starch, which is used to make products ranging from paper to biofuel.
But researchers say the crop’s viability is now at risk as more intense dry spells and rains bring about conditions in which pests and diseases can flourish.
Scientists who gathered data from more than 400 sites across the region found symptoms of witches’ broom disease or mealybug in at least two-thirds of the cassava fields they studied.
The former, which has already reached the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand, causes leaves to discolour and bunch into a shape resembling a witch’s broomstick....

Cassava prices hit a new low
28 Jun 2017 13:00
Cassava prices in Cambodia experienced a sharp drop this month leading to heavy losses for smallholder farmers unable to quickly switch to more profitable crops and recoup their mounting losses, a provincial agriculture official said yesterday.
Faced with low prices of around 144 riel per kilo of fresh cassava at the beginning of the harvest season, which runs from December to April, farmers decided to delay collecting the starchy tuber, only to see prices plummet to a historical low of 108 riel per kilo earlier this month, explained Soy Sopath, agricultural director for Pailin province at the Ministry of Agriculture.

I met some foreign guys growing cassava in Cambodia about 3-4 years ago who seemed to be doing ok then, but maybe it all went downhill after that ?vladimir wrote: Old news. Cassava should be your last choice.

Cassava policy in the pipeline
6 September 2017
- Commerce Minister Pan Sorasak said yesterday that the Ministry of Commerce, development partners and stakeholders were considering developing a policy that aims to leverage national efforts to address priorities in the cassava sector.
He said that the national cassava policy should be seen as a guiding document on how to ensure sustainable and resilient crop production, how to upgrade and strengthen cassava value chains, and how to convert market access into market presence.
“We need a system and a mechanism to help smallholder farmers, and at the same time push for large scale cassava production,” he added.
“This policy will boost the livelihood of people as we process the cassava so that farmers will have value added products,” he said.
There is a lack of processing factories in Cambodia for cassava growers to add value to their exports in the form of semi-processed products like cassava chips and starch. Because of this, Cambodia’s unprocessed cassava exports are just limited to Thailand and Vietnam.
