Freak accident when motorcyclist struck on the head by lightning

Steung Treng Province:
A terrible freak accident occurred at 2:30pm on 3 September 2017 on National Rd 7, Stung Treng province, when a young motorcyclist was struck on the head by a bolt of lightning, which passed right through his helmet.
The victim, Poy Narim aged 22 from Lomphat, Ratanakiri, was killed instantly, losing control of his motorbike and veering into the path of a couple on another motorbike, causing them to crash. They were both severely injured and taken to hospital for treatment.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't the tires have kept him grounded?

If you mean prevent him being grounded, not for a huge charge like that, it can easily jump those last few inches to earth, not to mention he was probably riding in the wet.
