Cambodian philanthropist Geraldine Cox (Sunrise Cambodia) sues for defamation after Facebook comment

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Interview with Geraldine Cox:
‘These children need to be loved’: Geraldine Cox on staring down her darkest days
She has run orphanages in Cambodia for decades, against huge odds. But in 2017, the Australian known as Big Mum faced her greatest fear – having to close down her operation.
By Sydney Morning Herald -
"This has been a worse time for me than anything that happened before," she says, looking tired. "After spending 25 years dedicated to the children, it really looked as though it might finally all fall in a heap, that I might lose everything. I couldn't sleep. I lost weight. I was off food and I even almost lost my sense of humour, which was pretty tragic. It's been terrible."

That so much trouble came from the most unexpected direction made it even more of a shock. You might even call it friendly fire. In 2017, the United Nations' Children's Fund UNICEF declared war on many orphanages around the world, especially in south-east Asia, and Cambodia in particular, after an investigation uncovered abhorrent practices. They found that most of the "orphans" in care in Cambodia had at least one parent, but were being kept in institutions as a way of earning money for their corrupt owners and managers. Foreign tourists were bussed in to visit and encouraged to donate cash, buy handicrafts and leave gifts after talking with the children or being entertained by their dancing or singing – money which the orphanage owners would purloin, passing on a small percentage to parents.

The basic mistake is allowing kids that have at least one parent, sibling or close relative to remain at an "orphanage"
Perhaps if Khmers stopped fucking so much without birth control, the situation could be dealt with better.
Plus, its the feeling in Cambodia, the more kids you have that there will be someone to take care of you in ur old age.

Treat the cause, not the symptom

Yea, a harsh opinion but.....
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Imagine that.

One year before closing they were smearing children with dirt and received a lot of criticism for its poverty porn practices to raise funds.

Geraldine Cox defended and supported Lucy Perry when she advertised ordinary orphans as victims of child sex trade.

Very charged language here and of course bullshit, a "war" lol, it is easy to research that in 2017, the government and UNICEF did a Joint study here and found over 16,000 Children were estimated to be in residential care in Cambodia in over 400 "orphanages" with over 80% having at least one living parent. (another study suggested closer to 50,000 or 1 in 100 cambodian children). The response to this is jointly with UNICEF and the government and several NGO'
with a commitment to closing all of these orphanages and placing kids back with their families, people like Cox are upset because their cash cow is now done. If Cox can't see the importance of kids remaining with their families she has no place working with them.

She is an old lady. She wont be able to do this much longer whatever happens. If she was smart she would be looking for someone to take over when she stops, and then retiring. Then the whole issue will go away. She could even be an advisor and assist for awhile.

Is the money she is using for legal fees, money she has collected for the children? If it is she will lose a lot of donations.

Sometimes people focus on the wrong things. She should look at the big picture.

She has been semi-retired for a few years and now spends most of her time in Australia.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
