The futility of site blocking to prevent piracy

Here's an interesting read - in simple English - on the futility of site blocking as an anti-piracy measure, from Australia's biggest non government ISP, iiNet. http://blog.iinet.net.au/site-blocking/
Site blocking: Does it work?
To preface this blog, let me point out, yet again, that we think piracy is wrong.
This blog is not a ‘how to’ session on copyright infringement, we don’t do that. This is more of an attempt to educate people that think in sentences that start with the word ‘just’:
“Just block the pirate bay”
“Just make ISPs responsible”
“Just do something”.
We’re not the only country looking for solutions and we’d have to be a brain-dead zombie to simply lurch along, ignoring the fate of those who went before. Let’s ask our elected representatives to learn from the experience of other jurisdictions and do that by examining the evidence; the actual, verified, empirical evidence of what works and what doesn’t.

Not quite entirely futile, it'll stop a few casual users but anyone who really wants access to content their government or big corporations don't want them to have can get it fairly easily. Content providers need to get onboard with new technology and distribution models and governments on the whole should just butt out.

Even Google offers a workaround these days.

Agreed utterly futile. But not convinced that's the purpose. Being established as the people that dictate the debate and subsequent internet legislation...that has immense significance, purpose and monetary value

Is it piracy to use Internet foolery to get around geolocation restrictions to access Netflix and other iptv services?

Depends on who's definition of piracy is applied - I think as long as it's the film/television industry definition, we're all going to be looking for workarounds. Believe it or not, Walt Disney is responsible for much of it - and bear in mind that most of his original plots were stolen from cultures or villages other than his own, without common consent.
