Cruise ship wrecks one of Indonesia’s best coral reefs at Raja Ampat
9 March 2017 /
Raja Ampat, one of the Southeast Asian country’s most popular dive sites, has been likened to an underwater Amazon.

JAKARTA — One of the main coral reefs at Raja Ampat, an Indonesian island chain home to perhaps the world’s richest marine biodiversity, was severely damaged last week when a Bahamian-flagged cruise ship smashed into it at low tide, according to an official report.

The 4,290-tonne Caledonian Sky, which was carrying 102 passengers and 79 crew on a 16-night journey from Papua New Guinea to the Philippines, damaged approximately 1,600 square meters of coral at a diving site known as Crossover Reef.

The incident resulted in the destruction of the ecosystem’s structural habitat and the reduction or loss of diversity of eight coral genera, including acropora, porites, montipora and stylophora...

Richard, I think they've succeeded in wiping out The Great Barrier Reef, right?

But lots of smaller reefs.

Mozambique, Madagascar and parts of South Africa add to list

Scuba diving trips around the world: readers’ tips

WINNING TIP: Muck diving, Lembeh, Indonesia

For some excellent muck diving (on organism-rich but murky sediment), head to the Lembeh Strait in Indonesia, home to critters such as the mimic octopus, hairy frogfish and flamboyant cuttlefish. The Kungkungan Bay Resort (doubles from £116 B&B) has a private jetty (you can come back to the hotel between dives for a nice hot shower!), a house reef which can only be dived by guests and special photo pros in residence who will share their photography tips. Diving is best towards the end of the dry season in September and October.
