Blocked drains
Here's another tip for those that have a blocked drain,,, in my case it was a kitchen sink, that no matter how much I used the old plunger it did'n't clear it.
Went to my local hardware shop that sells drain cleaner produced by a overseas manufacturer $7.50. Was given a second option, which was a white powder in a plastic bag with no markings on it . One kg for $2.50 , and the guy said he had no idea what it was. [ He speaks good English ]
Poured half down the sink hole and used the plunger,, and it cleared instantly. Poured the other half down the sink hole for good luck.
It was only after the skin on two of my fingers started disappear I knew what the stuff was, ,,,, Caustic Soda.
Also good for stripping off paint.

Apparently vinegar + baking soda triumphs over anything else without being too mean to the environment

forgive me if you weren't looking for a tip yourself, one of those lifehacks you come across, another good one is freezing grapes instead of water for ice cubes, as they defrost they don't dilute your drink (or alter the taste)

Re: Blocked drains
Yep, that's caustic soda or sodium hydroxide, and in the plain plastic shopping bag it's 98% pure (not including impurities!) - you're really lucky that didn't fountain back at you and give you a life-long burn scar, or that the fumes didn't drop you where you stood. We use that stuff by the bucket load, and there are really specific handling requirements for it that aren't reflected in how Khmer sellers throw it around.
For clearing drains, add around 200g of the caustic to 500ml of water (NEVER add the water to the powder, or just drop the powder down a sink or drain), stirring with a stick or stainless steel spoon until dissolved. Do this outside. Pour it down whatever is plugged and be sure you're not going to be standing in it or inhaling it. If you get it on you, immediately flush with running water. You'll know if it's really burned you as it will go straight through your skin (I've done this a couple of times and have no intention of doing it again) - stand under the shower, while you send someone else to get the vinegar.

Re: Blocked drains
I thought the sodium hydroxide was mixed with Aluminium flakes (Draino back home), which in solution creates hydrogen gas that pushes the shit outa the pipes. Along with the caustic action breaking down fats.....

Re: Blocked drains
Don't know about mixing it with aluminium flakes, but the fumes of NaOH in solution (while still exothermic) will make you cough a lung up before it drops you. Here's a medical reference: https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/002487.htmBarang chgout wrote: ↑Mon Jul 31, 2017 7:23 am I thought the sodium hydroxide was mixed with Aluminium flakes (Draino back home), which in solution creates hydrogen gas that pushes the shit outa the pipes.
