Traditionally, the cork was actually sliced and shown to the buyer to demonstrate that the wine had been correctly stored. The aging of the wine should be reflected in the 'soak' into the cork. Also, if the bottom of the cork is fragmenting, it's an indication of poor storage or that the wine is corked.

Cask wine, or chateau cardboard as we liked to call it, had the added advantage of using the silver bladder as a pillow once depleted of its contents and inflated. Perfect for those lonely nights under the bridge.
