AndyKK wrote: Tue Jul 18, 2017 10:04 pm "girlfriend" or "darling"

doesnt mean "girlfriend",
Girlfriend is แฟน - "Faaen" - Boyfriend/Girlfriend
ที่รัก - "Teerak/Teelak" means Sweetheart, Darling, Honey (its a word of Endearment) the Khmer equivalent would be Bong/Oun Somlanh

Cambodian Expats are just as bad with mixing in the few khmer words they know in the middle of English sentences lol

Not the ones I know, unless it's a place name or word that doesn't have a good equivalent in English.
Maybe I'll try making a post on a Thai-based forum asking about a visa for my met srey and see how well that works out.
Or maybe I won't, because it's fucking retarded.

Successful communication happens when the person listening understand what is being said, regardless of the language. It can be nonverbal communication, or even what is not being said that s the message and as long as it's understood, it's successful.

I mix languages and use slang all the time, when appropriate. It's usually only the pendejo's and the shmucks that want to be pedantic.

I disagree, most Thais couldn't care a less, same as Khmer-Viet.

However, I do acknowledge that Thais believe they are the chosen race, but they are not alone in that delusion...shhh...that of which we do not speak...

Rak= Love, but teerak is taken to mean my darling, my sweatheart
Peu-un= Freind

Yeah, we get people turning up here speaking Thai bargirl gibberish fairly often, I avoid having anything to do with them. 8-)

Richard came to visit me in Cambodia, we took a boat ride across the Mekong to a small market town in Laos, no visa required. I did not speak their language, and also very limited Khmer. Richard with is fluent Thai was able to communicate. Thanks to my friend he had saved me quite a bit of money on a woodwork tool I needed. Thanks again Richard. :)
