Australian man escapes from Bali's Kerobokan jail...

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

Bali police are investigating whether four foreign inmates, including an Australian man, drowned as they tried to dig their way out of Kerobokan Prison.

A police diver attempted to check the tunnel today but discovered it was unstable and flooded with water.

Badung Police Chief Yudith Satriya Hananta said police did find a fork inside but there was no sign of the prisoners.

There are now fears the inmates are trapped or possibly could have drowned.

Police are working to drain the tunnel as part of investigations.

If these guys did get away I don't think getting a fishing boat across the Malacca Straits into Malaysia would be too much trouble if you have some money, and then on further into SEA is pretty simple from all accounts. Establish a new identity, bury your self in India working for a gang of counterfeiters in Mumbai,

make friends, live in a slum and treat the poor, fall in love.....write a book and retire wealthy.

Thats every expats dream. I've been told that it is possible to do it in Cambodia.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Yeah, a white face in an Indian slum won't attract any attention at all. Sadly, the days of romanticized Papillon type escape stories are long gone.

Shantaram author Greg Roberts may disagree.

Haha :D

But someone wrote a letter to the Sydney Morning Herald today saying:

If you escaped from a prison in Bali ("Australian one of four inmates to tunnel out of Kerobokan prison", June 20) just where do you escape too [sic]?

Jesus, there are thousands of islands in Indonesia... and plenty of big cities... it wouldn't be too hard to disappear there.

OMG. This is so funny. (If it's true of course.) Total crazy shit.
It's reported that Shaun attempted to escape from Bali's K Prison, so that he would get caught, and then he wouldn't get released in 2 months and deported to Australia where he's facing drug charges. Shaun actually loves his life in Bali prison, and he wanted to get banged up again for a longer term. Where this gets really funny, is that in Indonesia your sentence is not increased for escape attempts, so his cunning plan is a non-starter. If he gets caught, he will still serve out his 2 months before being shipped back to Oz. But what a mind-set. Go Shaun. That is thinking outside the box. :voilent4:
Escapee Shaun Davidson told prisoners in Bali's Kerobokan jail he intended to do something before his imminent release that would extend his stay in Hotel K, as the prison is colloquially known.
Davidson had just 10 weeks left to serve after being sentenced to a year's jail in Bali for using another man's passport.

But he also faces drug charges in Australia.
An outstanding warrant exists for Davidson after he skipped the country and failed to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on January 28, 2015.
He was charged with possessing methamphetamine and cannabis with intent to sell or supply, possession of drug paraphernalia and no authority to drive.

Instead of facing his drug charges Davidson spent a year partying and boxing in Bali before falling foul of immigration authorities for using another man's passport that had been reported missing by its owner in 2013.

"Davidson had made no secret of his intention to avoid being sent back to Australia," a Kerobokan source told Fairfax Media.
A frequent topic behind bars had been how he could be deported to a third country at the end of his sentence that did not have an extradition treaty with Australia.

"He actually likes prison. I can well imagine he escaped with the aim of being caught and extending his sentence in Kerobokan, which is far more comfortable and drugs more easily available than in an Aussie prison," the source said.

A former prisoner said Davidson wanted to stay longer in "Hotel K".

"He was asking me what I thought he could do to stay longer to avoid going back to Australia," the ex-prisoner said on Facebook. "As a joke, I said, 'Try escaping'. I guess he took it literally."

Bali corrections chief Surung Pasaribu said under Indonesian law the men would not receive extra jail time for escaping if they were recaptured.

"Maybe we should change the law," he told reporters. "If they damaged property during their escape they will be separately tried for that. If anyone assisted them they would also get prison time.

Yes I read that too. Just escaping isn't enough to get his sentence increased... so he probably needs to commit a crime worthy enough of more time, but not bad enough for the death penalty.

Two of them made it to East Timor / Timor Leste, why you would check into their top hotel is anybody's guess:

Two of the prisoners who escaped from Bali's Kerobokan jail on Monday have been arrested at a luxury resort in Dili, the capital of East Timor

The Australian guy is still on the run.

Interview with Shaun Davidson in September 2016 where he describes the prison conditions in Bali's Kerobokan jail :

Bali: A West Australian man jailed for a year in Bali on Thursday for using another man's passport has told of his life behind bars at the notorious Kerobokan jail. Shaun Davidson, arrested in Bali for using another man's passport, has been sentenced to a year behind bars at Kerobokan jail.

"It [Kerobokan jail] was built for 300 prisoners, there are 1200 there," Davidson said. "The first couple of weeks you get there, there are 20 other people here in the cell the size of this area here," he said, gesturing to the tiny holding cell crammed with prisoners outside Denpasar District Court.
"No beds, no nothing, you don't get given anything. Just like concrete floors. In the corner they have got a bit blocked off where there is a hole in the ground. That's pretty much the toilet and the shower."
He said prisoners were not even given a mat.

However, Davidson said conditions were bearable if you had money and support from the outside...

Police don't believe Bali jail escapee Shaun Davidson is in East Timor
23 June 2017
Bali: East Timorese police do not believe Kerobokan jail escapee Shaun Davidson is in East Timor, saying only two of the four foreign prisoners who escaped crossed from Indonesia.

Davidson, a 33-year-old from Perth, and Malaysian Tee Kok King remain at large a day after two of their fellow escapees were arrested in a luxury resort in Dili, the capital of East Timor...
