Fake official charges villagers $2000 to settle land dispute.
Just because they're villagers, doesn't mean they are stupid.
All is up for grabs in Ratanakkiri right now until the forests run out. It would be interesting to know more about the "local businessman" involved in this land dispute. He will probably end up stealing a lot more than the fake official.
Fake official charged with fraud
20 June 2017
- Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday charged a 36-year-old man with fraud for allegedly posing as a government official and attempting to extort money from villagers in a land dispute in Ratanakkiri province. Court spokesman Ly Sophana identified the man as Sar Moeundara.
“He was arrested by the Anti Corruption Unit on June 16 and was sent to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for questioning on Monday morning,” he said. “He was charged with fraud with aggravating circumstances.”
[But] an official working with the ACU said the suspect told villagers in Baloung City that he was a senior official with the Council of Ministers.
The source added that the suspect asked the villagers to pay $2,000 to help them settle a land dispute with a businessman.
After many visits to the community, villagers became suspicious of the man and began doing research into his background, discovering he was unemployed. They then filed a complaint to the ACU, the source said.
