PM calls for preservation of Cambodia's historic buildings
"Historic buildings have value and should be preserved" : an encouraging speech theme by Cambodia's PM during an international conference on sustainable tourism. The future will tell if this interest in historic buildings will be followed up by action and preservation by the ministries concerned once the conference is over.

Re: PM calls for preservation of Cambodia's historic buildings
And of course, these speeches about historic preservation have a lot to do with the present Unesco evaluation of Battambang, Kratie and Kampot as world heritage cities which is based in large part on the conservation of their French colonial architecture.

A Unesco delegation yesterday conducted a study of Battambang city after the government asked the organisation to recognise it as a world heritage site.
Ministers last month asked Unesco to classify Battambang, Kratie and Kampot as world heritage cities, as part of efforts to preserve traditional Khmer and French-colonial architecture.

Re: PM calls for preservation of Cambodia's historic buildings
Outside of old temple sites, there are very few old buildings here. There are still plenty of well-preserved or refurbished older buildings though (100- 150 years old max). I can't imagine with the price of land that too many developers will be interested in preserving them. There's no money in it, knocking them down and using the full plot to build high-rises is more promising. I'm not saying I agree with this particularly, just that it's far more pragmatic and likely to transpire.

The white building isn't old or historic by any means. Especially in its current state. Molyvann just yesterday said he supported the CNRP because of the lack of urban planning by the current powers. I noticed the new hotel going up on 178 is keeping the old building intact and will be showcasing it instead. Of course, it's a foreign company so that explains why they'd want to preserve it.

What's the story with this one besides the Post Office
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.

Re: PM calls for preservation of Cambodia's historic buildings
As an example of the works of Vann Molyvann, it is indeed historic. However it has suffered from neglect over the past few decades to the point of having become unsalvageable. Architecture can be historic or notable for many reasons, not just for being old. There are lots of 1950s/60s buildings around Riverside that give the area a very distinctive and cohesive style, particularly all the curved corner ones. When you see old footage of Phnom Penh from the 1960s you can see how beautiful it was. If more could be done to restore it to its former glory it would be great. Once they're gone, they're gone.Bitte_Kein_Lexus wrote: ↑Wed Jun 14, 2017 7:23 am The white building isn't old or historic by any means. Especially in its current state. And it's too late to restore this one.

Re: PM calls for preservation of Cambodia's historic buildings
It was the Central Police Station in the protectorate, built in 1892. It's not the original building that is in this 1910 photo though, it was remodeled in the 1920s. Apparently both that and the demolished building you posted above are owned by Royal Group:
