If you're not aware, it's actually incredibly cheap and easy to get a Cambodian driver's license if you have a valid Australian one - take your Aussie license to Lucky Lucky or the licensing desk at Aeon Mall, pay around $35 and fill out a form, wait between 2 and 4 weeks, done deal. Your receipt will cover you for the waiting period.timmydownawell wrote: ↑Tue May 23, 2017 6:01 pmThe subject came up before so I did check it, it's quite clear I have to hold an Australian moto licence in order to ride one in another country regardless of that country's laws. I've been here a year and only used motodops so far, but one day I might buy my own so I need to keep my options open.StroppyChops wrote: ↑Tue May 23, 2017 5:57 pm You might want to check your insurance fine-print again, it might say you need a license that is valid in the country you're riding in or an international license (which is NOT recognised in Cambodia, there is NO reciprocity between Cambodia and the driving members associations that offer the international license) and it might say you're not covered unless driving lawfully on roads.

Didn't say it didn't sound fishy, just that the required money didn't seem like much. I've had close friends get denied insurance claims and were stuck with several hundred thousand in medical expenses which ruined them financially for many years to come, so 140?k USD doesn't surprise me.StroppyChops wrote: ↑Tue May 23, 2017 5:45 pmI find the whole thing a little off, to be honest - they're deliberately dodging questions about insurance, and are trading on the cute-white-girl-in-distress element. A terrible injury, and good that others have put their hands in their pockets for her, but still doesn't sound right. She could have got that treated and rehabilitated in Thailand at a similar level of care for much less, and the claim about needing treatment for Chron's Disease just adds unnecessarily to the pathos.
I personally am leaning towards that they weren't careful by not reading the fine print, were possibly drunk at the time, and might be trying to skim off the top to get what they feel entitled to, or all of the above.

Australian travel insurance policies are quite explicit about needing to have an Australian moto Licence. They are expensive to get with a number of hours required riding with an instructor. A few hundred dollars at least.
They are also quite explicit about being a passenger with an unlicensed driver. Obviously in Cambodia most dops and tuk tuks do not have licenses. It's a minefield really.

It's unbelievable the amount of moto driving tourists in Asia who don't have a bike license at home. Almost all of them so you'll keep getting unlucky ones begging for money because they thought they were invincible. Sad but true.
I know with World Nomads you need U.K. Or Oz bike license if you want them to pay out regardless if you have bike license from thai or cambo.
Don't need bike insurance they don't cover bike costs anyway.

The only reason I got a bike licence in AU was because my work moved far enough away to warrant it. It takes about four years to get from Learner to Red Provisional to Green Provisional to a full licence (although less if you have a car licence, which I don't). I can finally upgrade to full licence now, but you can't do it from outside of Australia, so I'll extend my green Ps for three years and presumably I'll be in a position to visit NSW again sometime to complete the upgrade before then. I don't really fancy riding here in the crazy traffic, but I don't want to pass up the opportunity to in the future.willyhilly wrote: ↑Tue May 23, 2017 6:51 pm Australian travel insurance policies are quite explicit about needing to have an Australian moto Licence. General, while we're on the subject, what do I need to do to get Travel Insurance from here in Thailand? Here's my situation: For the past few years. I have been suffering from really bad panic attacks (God only knows why) and as of now, getting on a plane to fly 27 hours back home is out of the question. So what I did is contact an agent from a freighter company so that, if need be, I can travel back to the US by boat (freighter). Of course this isn't something that is generally done but if I go back to the US, I feel it's my only option. There is a freighter that leaves from a port in Malaysia and then goes over the Atlantic to New York. It's on the expensive side (about $5,000) and takes about 2 1/2 weeks and the agent only told me I will NEED Travel Insurance. Are there any cheap 1-way package deals? Do you know anything about this? Your advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.
