Dodging the dengue fever bullet

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Actually, my bad Vlad! You're right! You should get immunity to that serotype you were infected with. It seems that though you may get lifelong immunity to that serotype, you only get short-term immunity to the others. If you get infected by the other serotypes, current thought is that it may cause antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), which seems to exacerbate the symptoms of infection and lead to the hemorrhagic syndrome - but that is an unproven theory.

So you were lucky that you got a milder dose! In saying that, there are 2 other serotypes, and the different serotypes of Dengue seems to rotate in cycles comprising of several years.

I had it once, and felt like death, so can't imagine how the kids or older ones feel when they come down with it - so hopefully this new vaccine is a winner!

Here is a link to a dengue map for 2014 - you would think there would be some interest in this. I've had it too and it was a pretty bad fortnight I can tell you.

Ummm - Sanofi-Pasteur is at the centre of this trial - this company is probably the largest company in the world devoted to production of vaccines - you probably got some of these before you left for Cambodia.........
The company has centres in different parts of the world for the purpose of trialling their vaccines to tackle diseases where they are most prevalent. So given that dengue is most prevalent in SEA, then their R & D site in Chachoengsao Thailand makes alot of sense.

That's probably coz you got a different serotype the second time. If you get another hit with a virus of the first, or now even the second....... then that could become a problem with hemorrhagic shock syndrome.
Just for clarity, you're second quote wasn't me. It's courteous to include a name is a later quote is someone other than the original quotee.
Is that not what I did? look again!
Well, NOW, but earlier... :D

Might be the issue Jacob had earlier - on laptop, tablet and phone I can't see the username for your second quote. I'll grab a screenshot later, but no biggie.
