Information minister invites world's press for World press Freedom Day
It could be interesting to invite the world's press to Cambodia to discuss press freedom, but this cunning plan has great potential to backfire on the Cambodian authorities.There is a strong possibility that the world's journalists do not have the same vision of World Press Freedom as the Cambodian Ministry of Information.

The timing could also prove awkward, with the commemoration to be held next year on World Press Freedom Day, coinciding with the run-up to Cambodia's national elections.

The government plans to invite journalists from around the world to Phnom Penh to discuss how the media can best operate in a changing world.
Information Minister Khieu Kanharith marked World Press Freedom Day yesterday by telling a gathering of more than 100 journalists of his intention to hold an event that would put Cambodia on the global stage.
He told the meeting in Phnom Penh’s Chamkarmon district he had ambitious plans to invite journalists from 50 to 60 countries to the Cambodian capital to attend a unique event to commemorate World Press Freedom Day.
The ministry will next week begin assembling a working group involving its own staff, journalist associations and other relevant groups, said Mr Kanharith.
The plan is for all parties to meet as soon as possible and agree a list of topics for discussion. Then he will approach groups including the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) for sponsorship...
