Cambodia work permit: any updates?
Cambodia work permit: any updates?
There's last year's post that says that All Foreigners With an E Visa Need a Work Permit. The real numbers are known, but I suspect that this means that at least 70% of foreigners in Cambodia on an E visa are now breaking the law.
Most of them could not even get a work permit, because they are not working here, and do not have the employer in Cambodia, required to apply for one.
According to last year's post on this subject, immigration is now going through the entire stock of apartment rentals in order to hunt for foreigners who use E visa to stay in Cambodia, but do not want to work. Since it is actually hard to find a decent job in Cambodia, non-working E-visa foreigners could be in serious trouble. The largest groups of people heading straight towards trouble are retirees and volunteers.
In that sense, the time may have come for foreign retirees to sell their condominium apartments in Cambodia and pick another country where they would at least be able to obtain a proper retirement visa?
There is simply too much legal uncertainty in Cambodia, to make long-term plans. Never plan anything beyond a year or possibly two. If you invest, the number one concern has always been how fast you can unwind the investment. Since there are no regular markets where you can quickly dump assets, this usually means that you should not invest at all. But then again, all of that has been the case for decades now.
A retirement flat could easily cost you well in excess of $100 000. You could lose it at the stroke of a pen, when immigration hunts you down. While languishing in Cambodian immigration jail, you will have to sign over your property just to obtain your release from prison.

If you have a Retirement visa extension (ER) then you do not need a WP.

Really? Scaremongering?eriksank wrote: A retirement flat could easily cost you well in excess of $100 000. You could lose it at the stroke of a pen, when immigration hunts you down. As I understand it if a foreigner is approached by immigration and they determine that he should have a work permit, he is given a grace period in which to sort one out. He is fined and if he doesn't subsequently acquire a work permit, he is in danger of deportation.
"Have to sign over your property to obtain your release from prison..."
Really? What evidence are you basing this on?
Most foreigners' properties are in the name of either a Khmer individual, typically a wife or girlfriend, or owned through Khmer nominees as part of a limited company. These properties would almost certainly not be affected by any individual foreigner immigration problems.
The limited number of foreigners who have properties actually in their names, IF they were forced to sell, would be given some months in which to do this (my lawyer's advice). But there is no evidence that sale of property is linked to release from immigration prison anyway as far as I know.

Re: Cambodia work permit: any updates?
Another scaremongering unresearched post based on previous unresearched postings!. There were a few folk around Kampot or Kep and maybe SR that had possibly a fake or corrupt immigration team come and try and extract $ for previous ordinary visa stickers. This was to folk who did not and never worked. I heard someone who was over 70 was told had to pay or else..
6 months ago even the travel agents issuing the visa's were ill informed, and were
told by the visa issuer who were also probably misinformed it has to be EB visa for long stay which is connected to business only with the initial B.
But now there is the ER (retired) type that should clear all the misunderstanding up. Nothing special needed to obtain one up to now.

We actually never got confirmation for the Kampot, Kep, and SR incidents. These things are just rumours about retirees who got into bad trouble. It is almost sure that these incidents really happened, but how can you investigate, when the retiree "criminals" have been deported already? Who are you going to ask for details?Fourkinnel wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2017 10:13 amThere were a few folk around Kampot or Kep and maybe SR that had possibly a fake or corrupt immigration team come and try and extract $ for previous ordinary visa stickers. Fact remains that retirees generally don't work, and hence cannot apply for a work permit, and therefore often find themselves on the wrong side of the law when a "corrupt immigration team" investigates them. It is not far-fetched at all that they will have to pay to get themselves released from immigration prison, you know, the detention center right across the Pochentong airport. Gosh, they especially built that prison for illegal (retiree and other) immigrants! It is even better than building a wall with Mexico.

You are nothing but a fear monger. I seriously doubt anyone ever got there for lack of WP while having a valid visa.eriksank wrote: ↑Mon Apr 10, 2017 3:17 pmWe actually never got confirmation for the Kampot, Kep, and SR incidents. Also if I personally know of a few jailed people (convicted felons) who lost their bank savings, cars and other property while in detention it was always their own lawyers who conned them not police or court officers.
