I guess its the working class English school mentality.
"The British have a talent for caustic satire and painful put-downs: fact. Not one of the more provocative statements from The Office's David Brent, but the finding of a piece of research that is likely to ignite controversy on both sides of the Atlantic.
A survey of more than 4,000 twins suggests that humour regarded as typically British – sarcasm and self-deprecation – is linked to genes found in British men and women, but not shared, for instance, by Americans.
While telling jokes and looking on the bright side of life – which researchers dubbed positive humour – is common to both sides of the Atlantic, only in the UK did they discover genetic links with negative humour – biting sarcasm and teasing. Experts admit that the results have left them baffled.
They say it may explain why the British like aggressively sarcastic or denigrating humour such as Fawlty Towers, Blackadder and, of course, The Office.
"It is possible that differences exist between these nations in their sense of humour and that these may be the result of different genetic and environmental influences," said Dr Rod Martin, one of the researchers." http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/th ... 93491.html
BTW here's a Victorian English Joke
WIFE: "You loved me before we were married!"
HUSBAND: "Well, now it's your turn!"
You find a joke condoning violence against women, funny??
BUT i do agree American vs english humor;
one example;
I love the US version of "Shameless" William Macy is perfect for the part
couldn't get the uk version at all
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

I can't speak for other Americans but where do you think the majority of our genes originated? In any case I am quite prone to sarcasm and irony, maliciously so it sometimes seems. In addition it is clear to me that America has produced many such writers, no small number of whom make a fine living from it.

What me sensitive? I'm not even politically correct. However this time Jamie LameO has gone too far and if he ever schedules a fight in this country I'll buy a ringside ticket just to picket this sexist swine. And I will not even look at the scantily clad ring girls, honest. That is if his promoter can afford them

Well, I disagree with you Jamie and if you took my post seriously then you don't understand banter yourself, at least American banter.
