Customs police at Phnom Penh International Airport on Wednesday arrested a Thai woman with 2.6 kilograms of cocaine disguised as candy, police and airport sources said yesterday.
Police said the suspect flew into the airport on Wednesday on flight QR 970, which is from Doha, Qatar, according to multiple flight directories.
A Thai national arrested Wednesday sits in police custody as officials unwrap candy packages filled with cocaine.
However, police said the suspect was originally coming from Bahrain, which she departed on Tuesday. Police requested media not publish the suspect’s name due to the ongoing investigation.
When her cylindrical candy boxes raised suspicions, customs officials opened them to find small bundles inside filled with a white powder, which further examination proved to be cocaine, said an airport security officer who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
A National Authority for Combating Drugs (NACD) official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said the haul was believed to be worth $250,000.
“She put the cocaine in, covered by the candy plastic and put them inside the box of candy. The case now is under investigation; we cannot tell details about it,” the police source said.
The evidence was sent to anti-drug officials at the Ministry of Interior, he said, and the suspect is being questioned.
Neak Yuthea, a deputy general at the NACD, yesterday confirmed the arrest of a Thai woman by customs police but said he didn’t know the details of the case, as he was in the provinces.
Yuthea said cocaine was a rare illicit product for Cambodia because of its expense and there was not much of a market here. He believed that the alleged drug mule was in transit to another country.
“We don’t have consumers of coke in Cambodia; construction labourers could not afford it,” said Yuthea. “If there are such cases of coke use in Cambodia, it is foreigners.”
A February report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime called Cambodia a drug transportation hub of growing importance, though mostly for meth and heroin. The UNODC was unavailable for comment.
The last time police busted someone with a comparable amount of cocaine was in April, when a Vietnamese national was caught smuggling 5kg from South America to Vietnam through Siem Reap International Airport.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Re: Thai woman drug mule caught with nose "candy"
The sad part of the story is those girls are always the pawn in the game of drugs. They have been tricked, or talked into it, believing they can get away with it by the supplier, by saying many girls do it and get away with it. Mostly they are uneducated or poor and often are in debt to the drug dealer and do it to repay a debt or get a small amount of money, not knowing the risk of being caught and the penalties.
No mater what the penalty is , wether it be the death sentence as in some countries, there will always be a endless supply of uneducated girls [ and guys ] to do the job.
Education is the only answer.

Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Not always true;
Back in the 80's, everyone leaving Kathmandu was patted down in a small curtain area, the norm was $100 /key to walk thru
Was with a friend of mine heading to Sydney from Manila ;
he had 3 k's of Nepali, got caught at the pat down, they took him into the bathroom and had him strip and took it all,
they told him ur fucked, and had to pay $10,000 or...
he told them he was broke so convinced them to allow him to board with 1 key and he would come back an buy the other 2 off of them;
they let him go. suffice to say he never returned to PI
There will always be mules and those using them
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Life for Thai woman tricked to carry drugs
A 22-year-old Thai woman was sentenced to life imprisonment after she was tricked into trafficking 2.5 kilograms of cocaine from the United Arab Emirates.
Phnom Penh Municipal Court presiding judge Heng Kessaror said Amphawan Kaewkanlaya was also fined 60 million riel (about $15,000) after police found packages of cocaine hidden in boxes of Lindt chocolates in her luggage.
“The court has decided to give her a life sentence and a fine of 60 million riel to be put in the national budget,” judge Kessaror said as he read the verdict yesterday.
“The court orders the confiscation of the drugs seized and other drug-related material to be destroyed,” he added.
Ms. Amphawan said she will be appealing the verdict as she maintained she was innocent. During her trial last month, she said she was unaware the gift she accepted from her boyfriend’s brother, the boxes of Swiss chocolates, during her trip to the UAE contained drugs.
“It is so unjust for me. I will consider my appeal of the judgment to the Appeal Court,” she said.
During her trial last month, Ms. Amphawan explained that she traveled from Thailand to Dubai in March to visit her boyfriend, who she merely identified as Ouche, and his family there.
Her boyfriend, a Nigerian national, had paid for her airline tickets, visa, food and accommodation, she said.
Before returning home last month, she was given the boxes of Lindt chocolates by Mr. Ouche’s older brother, whose name she could not recall. He had asked Ms. Amphawan to take the chocolates to a friend of his in Cambodia.
She added that she only realized the presence of the drugs when she was detained at Phnom Penh International Airport and police inspected the boxes.
Police seized 2,594 grams of cocaine and subsequently charged her with drug transporting, keeping and trafficking.
