Married British Couple (Robert Goldie-Wells & Imogen Goldie-Wells) Commit Suicide in Sihanoukville, Cambodia Guesthouse
Re: Married British Couple (Robert Goldie-Wells & Imogen Goldie-Wells) Commit Suicide in Sihanoukville, Cambodia Guestho
Thank you for your insights into this troubled young lady.SBG89 wrote:It was a bit surreal reading about this in the paper on my way home from work. Imogen was one of my friends at school, we used to go to the cafe in our free periods. She probably knew me the best of anyone at that point in my life. It was a very long time since I saw her but she was never very happy. I wasn't either but I got through it and sadly it seems like she didn't. If her own family don't doubt at all that this is a suicide then you guys don't need to either. RIP Imo
Please understand that peoples intentions come from a history of cover ups and dubious outcomes of murders committed in Cambodia. I hope the family find some closure in all this and our thoughts and prayers are with those left behind.

lol no, it was a local Aussie paper, part of Fairfax media and it was company policy to never report on suicides.SinnSisamouth wrote:why?rozzieoz wrote:When I was a journo we were not allowed to report on suicides.

Re: Married British Couple (Robert Goldie-Wells & Imogen Goldie-Wells) Commit Suicide in Sihanoukville, Cambodia Guestho
From the Press Council of Australia:
http://www.presscouncil.org.au/document ... reporting/General reporting and discussion
1. General reporting and comment on issues relating to suicide can be of substantial public benefit. For example, it may help to improve public understanding of causes and warning signs, have a deterrent effect on people contemplating suicide, bring comfort to affected relatives or friends, or promote further public or private action to prevent suicide.
2. Subject to careful compliance with the following standards, the Council does not wish to discourage material of this nature. Extra caution is required when the material is likely to be read or seen by people who may be especially vulnerable (eg, because of their age or mental health) and relates to suicides by their peers or by celebrities.
Whether to report an individual instance
3. In deciding whether to report an individual instance of suicide, consideration should be given to whether at least one of the following criteria is satisfied:
(a) reporting the death as suicide is clearly in the public interest (see note 2); or
(b) clear and informed consent has been provided by appropriate relatives or close friends (see note 3); or
(c) no appropriate authority (such as the police, a school principal or public health authority) has requested that the report be withheld or delayed to avoid a high risk of inducing further suicides.
4. In deciding whether also to report the identity of the person who has died by suicide, account should be taken of whether at least one of the following criteria is satisfied:
(a) identification is clearly in the public interest (see note 2); or
(b) clear and informed consent has been provided by appropriate relatives or close friends (see note 3).

We were in a very small, isolated community (Mount Isa) and there was a really high youth suicide rate.
I argued until I was blue in the face that it was better to expose what was going on but I was shut down each time. I thought if reported correctly, it could have helped the situation but the higher powers disagreed. It was very frustrating.

I wanted to do a general story on why there were so many but even that was not allowed.

Usually they are not explicit about it in articles, but the Lifeline link at the bottom of the articles is the giveaway.SinnSisamouth wrote:is that normal?rozzieoz wrote:lol no, it was a local Aussie paper, part of Fairfax media and it was company policy to never report on suicides.SinnSisamouth wrote:why?rozzieoz wrote:When I was a journo we were not allowed to report on suicides.
