Woman hired 9yo kid to beg for her.
Woman, 50, busted for hiring child as beggar
Fri, 23 December 2016
Kong Meta and Yesenia Amaro
A 50-year-old Phnom Penh woman is set to be sent to court today following her Wednesday arrest for allegedly luring a 9-year-old boy to work for her as a beggar in the streets of the capital, alongside her own 9- and 12-year-old children and 1-year-old grandson, anti-trafficking police said.
Keo Thea, director of the anti-trafficking office in Phnom Penh, said Yong Khem could face up to one year in jail. It’s unknown for how long the boy had worked for the suspect.
“She hired the boy to be a beggar and [paid] the boy 10,000 riel per day,” Thea said. Through the questioning, police found out that the woman would sometimes send her 1-year-old grandson with the children so they could earn more.
Despite child beggars and trinket vendors being a near-ubiquitous sight, Thea insisted similar prosecutions aren’t common because hiring children to beg is rare, maintaining that it’s usually children’s parents sending them to ask for money...

Re: Woman hired 9yo kid to beg for her.
After looking at her photo, she looks like a riel criminal . I hope she gets the full punishment thrown at her, just like those that do hit an runs, throw acid, do illegal logging and kill people when their bullets ricochet off a raincloud.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Depends how you look at the "news": obviously, a (poor) little old lady who is paying a kid who begs with her kids is the worse kind of exploitation.Bertros wrote:this is news?

Just wait until they start on the professional guys who truck poor people in to beg at riverside Phnom Penh. There must have been a huge traffic in beggars for the Water Festival in PP, and probably at the moment for Sihanoukville's Sea Festival.
Doesn't mean it"s right, but one woman with one begging kid who doesn't belong to her is arrested and faces one year in prison. Take a truck of twenty beggars to Riverside or Occheuteal and nobody says diddlysquat.
Just sayin'.

2.50 bucks a day for a ten year old, not bad wages. Some adults struggle to make that. Before anyone wants to be a smartass, I have worked on a farm most of my childhood with no wages. Every 2nd Sunday one was off duty. Other kids in the hood did go to farms and to help out when they felt like it, at 5 bucks an hour, wish I would have had that option.

fair enough. I wasn't questioning whether it was actually 'news' (as in current information to be presented to the public) or not, just that it's been going on for a long time. I recall it being reported in Thailand years ago that women would beg with kids that were not their own. personally I think it's terrible. hard to say if it's a good thing they are arresting them, not sure what happens to the kids when this happens and that's the real tragedy.CEOCambodiaNews wrote:Depends how you look at the "news": obviously, a (poor) little old lady who is paying a kid who begs with her kids is the worse kind of exploitation.Bertros wrote:this is news?
