Are those big stacks of riel real?
I noticed they have stacks of 1000 5000 10000 at the money changers in town.
Are they riel or fake? Does anyone know how much they cost?
Be handy to have instead of trying to use big notes.

Re: Are those big stacks of riel real?
Yes they are real. Though there is a lack of 1000 riel notes at the moment.
The cost depends on the condition of the notes.
Old notes will sell for whatever the displayed rate of exchange is for US$/ riel.
Brand new riel notes command a premium which varies according to demand (much more expensive at chum bun or Khmer new year) or to supply (new 1000 riel notes are very rare and currently cost an extra $4-8 per $100 worth if you can find them).
Currently a $100 pack of new 500 riel notes costs about $104.
Larger denomination new riel notes have a lower premium than the smaller notes.

Quite amazing isn't it. I saw a stack of 500, 1000 riel notes in one of those places, and they wanted 500,000 riel for them. That's about $125 ,,, Bloody ridiculous. Should be able to get a 10 % discount.

Chinese new year time is coming up and one is expected to put crisp brand new bills in the little red gift envelopes.
