Police in Battambang province are still searching for three armed men following the robbery of two women and the theft of more than $6,200 on Sunday evening.

Brigadier General Cheth Vanny, chief of the provincial major crimes unit, told Khmer Times yesterday that police and military police were working together to find the three men suspected of robbing rice dealer Ouk Oeur, 51, and rice seller Muong Sinath, 41.

“Our police now are working hard and searching for their identities to arrest them,” he said.

“So far we have not arrested anyone and do not know the suspects’ identities yet.”

He said that at 8:30pm, three men armed with two AK-47 rifles and a pistol had surprised the two women in Thmar Kol district as they were finishing a rice sale on the side of the road...

Three weeks ago, at the time of the robbery, around $6,200 was reported stolen, but for some reason the amount recovered turned out to be only $3600. Possibly a question of exchange rate correction between baht and riel. No doubt the victims were content to recover their $3,600. Good work by the Battambang police.

Rice Money Thieves Arrested

Three alleged thieves were arrested and charged yesterday by police in Battambang province after the trio was accused of stealing more than 130,000 Thai baht (about $3,600) from two women last month in the province’s Thmar Kol district.

Major Phang Sopheap, chief of the Thmar Kol district police, said that on the night of November 27 at about 8:30pm, the three alleged thieves – Chhorn Dy, 42, Thei Thym, 39, and Thei Thin, 36 – were armed with two guns and robbed the two women while they were selling rice on a road in Krous village in Battambang province.

Ouk Oeur, a 51-year-old rice buyer living in Thmar Kol district’s Bansay Treng commune, said the robbers stole 50,000 Thai baht ($1,400) and 10 million riel ($2,500). Muong Sinath, a 41-year-old rice seller living in the same commune, had 75,000 Thai baht (about $2,000), 500,000 riel (about $124) and her mobile phone stolen from her.

Ms. Sinath had planned to meet Ms. Oeur on the road to sell her a batch of rice. After she sold the rice, the thieves raided the meeting and stole the women’s bags and other valuables before fleeing the scene...
