Drug Busts Increasing This Year
Police have detained more than 5,000 people for drug-related crimes during the first nine months of this year and seized about 65 kilograms of illegal substances, a meeting was told on Friday.

Speaking on Friday at a meeting on anti-drug operations in the first nine months of the year, Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mok Chito said police had been busy cracking down on drugs.

He added that police had filed 2,265 cases this year, an increase of 597 compared with the same period in 2015. A total of 55,057 suspects had been detained, an increase of 1,655 on last year’s figures.

Last year, police arrested 3,402 suspects, filed 1,668 cases and seized 87 kilograms of drugs.

Gen. Chito pointed out that this year police had seized only 65 kilograms of illegal drugs, less than last year because there was one case in 2015 where police seized 54 kilograms in one haul.
He pointed out that operations to fight drug trafficking and use was actively going on across the country.

According to Gen. Chito’s report, among the 55,057 suspects, there were 69 foreigners detained over drug crimes. Police also seized 65.5 kilograms of drugs, 4.3 kilograms of dried marijuana, 62,023 marijuana plants and 95 kilograms of safrole oil. *

*Safrole is listed as a Table I precursor under the United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.[10] Due to its role in the manufacture of MDMA, safrole and isosafrole, as well as piperonal, are Category I precursors under regulation No 273/2004 of the European Community.[11] In the United States, safrole is currently a List I chemical.
