Users Loath to Shut Down Exploding Phones

On Monday, Samsung’s regional subsidiary, Thai Samsung Electronics, responded to widespread media reports of exploding devices by urging customers to immediately shut down their Galaxy Note 7s and bring them to its Phnom Penh service center to be exchanged.

In another stopgap measure, Samsung said it would offer a system update next week that will prevent the Note 7’s battery from charging past 60 percent, which should keep the phone from overheating.

Some 1,300 Note 7s have been sold in Cambodia since they were first introduced in late August, according to Chher Sokleng, marketing and communications manager for the South Korean company’s Cambodia branch.

While many customers are aware that their phones might burst into flames while charging, most say they are less than eager to exchange them...

In the latest on the Samsung meltdown, it is alleged that, not only does the burning phone syndrome affect many different types of Samsung devices other than the Note 7, but that Samsung has been aware of the danger for years.

Samsung exploding phone issue extends past Note 7, lawsuit says
Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 is not the company’s only smartphone prone to dangerous explosions, according to a new lawsuit that says a Galaxy S6 Active shot out five-inch flames and left a user with “melted flesh”.

The complaint, which alleges Samsung knew for years its technology was hazardous, comes amid an embarrassing and expansive recall of 1.9m Galaxy Note 7 devices after it was revealed that the lithium ion battery was catching fire.

The reports also mentioned problems with the Galaxy S2, Galaxy Tab 2, Galaxy Tab 3, Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.

“As the batteries progressed and became more powerful, the consequences became more significant,” said Gene Stonebarger, another attorney representing the Coverts. “This information is being repressed and has not been made public by Samsung. They are clearly aware of the dangers of their phones beyond the [Galaxy Note 7].”...

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 phones caught fire because of the ‘aggressive’ battery design: Report

Samsung (Korea Stock Exchange: 593-KR) was too "aggressive" in the design of its now-recalled fire-prone Galaxy Note 7 devices, particularly when it came to installing its battery, a new report claims.

The South Korean electronics giant was forced to recall and stop production of the Note 7 phones after reports of them exploding and setting alight. Samsung is yet to identify a reason for the issue publicly.

But one manufacturing technology company called Instrumental performed a teardown of the handset and thinks it has come up with the cause of the phablet's problems.

The battery in the Note 7 is made up of a positive layer made of lithium cobalt oxide, a negative layer made of graphite, and a layer to separate those two materials. The layer in the middle allows energy to flow between the positive and negative layers. But if those layers touch, it would cause the battery to heat and that could lead to an explosion, according to Instrumental.

Adding pressure on the battery in this instant – such as sitting on phone – could be enough to squeeze the thin separating layer which makes the positive and negative sides of the cell touch, Instrumental said.
