Cambodian women in the entertainment industry fight against abuse.
A 16-day campaign by their union was launched yesterday, but officials say only five percent of women in the service industry are brave enough to speak out.
The white ribbon campaign, “Stand up for women against violence,” has been organized by the Cambodian Food and Service Workers’ Federation .
Beer promoter Sry Chamrong, 33, told Khmer Times she faced intimidation by her company after it found out she had taken part in the union network.
“After we made our demands there were many protests by the company and dismissals have happened continuously,” she said.
Ms. Chamrong said she has always been treated with contempt by male customers who used unsuitable language. Some asked her to have sex with them which she refused, saying she is a beer seller, not a sex worker.
“At first I was afraid of dismissal, but afterwards I understood the law through the union. I seem to be brave and dare to make demands about things we are dissatisfied with,” she said.
She asked the government and the Women’s Affairs Ministry to pay attention to the women in this kind of job as well as in other entertainment services, and to ensure the safety of Cambodian women...

A recent example: http://www.khmertimeskh.com/news/32794/ ... -waitress/
A Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) officer was arrested by military police for allegedly sexually assaulting an 18-year-old waitress at a beer garden in Phnom Penh’s Sen Sok district on Sunday night.
The suspect was identified as Captain Heng Sambath, 42, an RCAF officer working at the Ministry of National Defense, said district military police officer Captain Phuong Bunly.
The victim was a waitress at the Monorom Tracheak Chitr Beer Garden in Phnom Penh Thmey commune’s Damnak village.
Cap. Bunly said that on Sunday at about 10pm, Cap. Sambath went to drink at the beer garden where he was served by the woman. He proceeded to drink about 24 cans of beer and became extremely drunk.
He then left without paying his bill, Cap. Bunly added, and was stopped on his way out by the waitress, who asked him to pay. But he told her he had forgotten his money at home.
“When the victim asked him to pay the money for his drinks and food, he touched her crotch,” Cap. Bunly told Khmer Times.
“He confessed that he committed sexual abuse on the victim because he got very drunk,” he said.
