Angkor Wat International Half Marathon this Sunday.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Angkor Wat gearing up for 10,000 runners
Thu, 1 December 2016
H S Manjunath

The 21st running of the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon, and other added attractions around the sprawling World Heritage site in Siem Reap on Sunday, is set to beat all previous records, with the organisers keenly anticipating the number of total participants to get close to or even surpass the 10,000 mark.

In keeping with the trends of the past four to five years, there has been an unprecedented rush of excitement among both overseas runners and locals for the Kingdom’s most popular and truly global sporting event, which offers no purse but tons of pride as a run for noble causes at the height of the tourist season.

Less than 250 runners from 14 countries lined up for the inaugural run in 1996, but that number reached a staggering 8,500 last year, nearly half of whom were from abroad, hailing from 75 countries, boosting expectations of a five-figure turnout this year...

More and more runners every year but the same starting pen without staggered departures. It is now 10 minutes of shuffling past the start line and then 5 kilometers of dodging walkers and people dressed as tigers or bears.

The Angkor Wat International Marathon is an annual marathon that takes place in December. Held inside the ruins of this UNESCO listed World Heritage site, it was first introduced in 1996 by Yuko Arimori, the first Japanese woman to win a marathon medal at the Olympics.

Today, the competition is also a charity event, with attendance by international participants, and landmine victims alike. According to the organisers, the race aims to appeal to the international community to support the "ban on the use of antipersonnel mines". Funds raised through the event go towards helping landmine victims with rehabilitation, as well as other local issues such as education and healthcare programmes. This year, Manulife will be the principal sponsor for the event for a total of 5 years, until 2019.

In the first pic, that's Hanno down the back there in the white t-shirt, isn't it?

Second pic, is she taking selfies while jogging?

The 21st running of the Angkor Wat international half marathon and various other supporting events attracted an all-time high of 9,150 runners at the World Heritage city of Siem Reap yesterday, with China’s Qi Bian and Danielle Hodgkinson of the United Kingdom dominating the men’s and women’s 21km charity runs.

The presence in the men’s line-up of Rio Olympics marathon contender Neko Heroshi, last year’s runner-up, kept Cambodian hopes high, but the 39-year-old comedian could only take fourth place this time as the race evolved into a three-way fight.

A passionate long-distance runner, 27-year old Qi began to dictate the tempo by the halfway stage and the Chinese runner never looked back.

He finished in a smart time of 1 hour and 13.16 minutes, ahead of Cambodia’s Ma Viro in 1:16.27.

Viro’s performance was a striking improvement from last year’s fourth place.

Edward Gumbley of the United Kingdom filed in a minute later to finish third.

For the women's race, Danielle Hodgkinson romped home easily in 1:23.24, a long way in front of Mary McCollay of Ireland in 1:27.52, with Lyndsay Clarke of Great Britain third in 1:33.03.

Good run, as usual, but they need to stagger departures. Just way too many people to let them all set off at once. First five kilometers were spent dodging walkers. To have the 3K fun run mix with the Half Marathon was also not a very good idea.
