Illegally poached birds seized in Banteay Meanchey
Authorities in Banteay Meanchey province’s Mongkol Borei district seized more than 200 illegally poached birds yesterday, officers there said.
Local Forestry Administration officials discovered the wildlife haul in Mongkol Borei’s Phnom Touch commune, where they found and confiscated a total of 216 Malay Night Herons and watercocks, according to Ouk Hokthavorrak, a Forestry Administration official in charge of Mongkol Borei and two other districts.
“We got information from the locals and cracked down. Most [of the birds] were the Malay Night Herons, with long beaks. Eleven of the birds were alive, and the rest were dead,” he said.

On Saturday, wildlife traffickers caught red-handed smuggling protected species were released after paying a small "fine" and "promising not to do it again". No wonder the business is thriving.
Endangered Civets, Snakes Rescued
Three men were detained in Tbong Khmum province on Saturday afternoon for smuggling civets and snakes in the back of a Toyota SUV, possibly with the intention of selling them in neighboring Vietnam.
The vehicle, which had traveled from Kratie province, was stopped by a joint team of military police and soldiers after authorities received a tip-off about an attempt to smuggle endangered wildlife, Kim Chhun Ly, director of the provincial forestry administration department, told Khmer Times.
“During our check of the SUV on National Road 7, in Memot district, we found five endangered civets and two snakes, which were all still alive,” Mr. Chhun Ly said.
“We transferred the endangered wildlife to the WildAid organization to be released at Takeo’s Tamao Zoo.”
He said Riem Chhen Rong, 30, Loem Chan Ly, 25, and Sa Ketha, 34, had all been detained at the scene, but had not been arrested.
“We did not send them to the court, we just fined them for their alleged involvement in the wildlife trade after they promised not to illegally traffic wildlife again,” he said...

Fisheries Administration (FiA) officials in Kampong Chhnang province confiscated an endangered fish weighing almost 40 kilograms from a tuk-tuk driver on Sunday in Boribor district’s Ponlai commune.
Deputy district FiA chief Chhim Dan said his officers intercepted the tuk-tuk-borne Siamese giant carp – which is listed as being critically endangered – following tip-offs from local motodops.
“The fish was already dead, having been caught in the river. The suspect put it on his tuk-tuk in order to bring it to the bus station,” Dan said, adding that the driver fled the scene before officers could ascertain his identity.
He added that as of yesterday the driver had not reported to the local FiA office, where his tuk-tuk is currently being held pending his payment of a fine.
The Law on Fisheries prescribes that those found to be catching, selling, buying, transporting, collecting or stockpiling endangered fish should be fined two to three times the market value of the fish.
Contacted yesterday, multiple FiA officials were unable to say what fine the tuk-tuk driver could expect to pay should he turn himself in. “Its owner doesn’t care about it, why should you care?” provincial Fisheries Administration chief Som Phirun said yesterday...

I have lived here a long time. The Cambodia that I fell in love with has almost disappeared. I'm an old man and don't really care where I die. But I would like my kids to live in a land that has a future. They deserve it and I have none or little at best.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Sadly I kind of agree. Slowly going down the drain with short-sighted $$$ in mind.taabarang wrote:I have lived here a long time. The Cambodia that I fell in love with has almost disappeared. They don't care, they are scared of forests and wildlife.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

To be fair, rabbits and pigs are not endangered species. Some deer are, and some are not. I think the indigenous tribes have the right to hunt certain wildlife for themselves and their families, but not to sell it. Obviously, this law is not followed to the letter. And yeah, over 100kgs of meat is not just a side business.
Yikes, what is this ?
