Koh Phangan: dead foreigner found weighed down with rocks.

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Koh Phangan: dead foreigner found weighed down with rocks.

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Dead foreigner found in Koh Phangan waters with rocks in his backpack

A man’s body has been found in the waters of Koh Phangan. The grisly discovery was made on Thursday. The man, who is believed to be European, was found about 500 meters from the shore close to a popular resort. He was wearing blue shorts and a backpack that contained five heavy rocks among other items.

The man’s body was sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in in Bangkok from Surat Thani on Thursday after local police were unable to reach any conclusion as to how he may have died. Police believe he may have been dead for up to five days.

Homicide has not been ruled out. Police are unsure as to whether the rocks could have been used to add weight for diving, or if they were used to weigh down the body to conceal a murderous crime. Police in the area are asking all resorts to review their guest lists to see if anybody is unaccounted for.

That is new. Usually it is heart attack, even if the head is missing and the body has been burnt......
whether the rocks could have been used to add weight for diving
Eh, no Sherlock.

Used to be in America (in the south) the police would surmise that he was swimming with more "swimming chain" than he should have been swimming with. In this case is it "swimming rocks?" I looked at living on that island, but got a very bad feeling/weird-vib.

Could be murder, but also suicide. If i remember right, there was a case in Cambodia where a drowned body was found with a backpack full of rocks, and also money and personal possessions: passport, camera, phone etc. Turned out that the victim was seriously depressed, and it was very probably suicide. But, of course, first suspicions were of foul play.

But, in this case, impossible to say what happened until they identify the victim and the circumstances of death etc. Seems odd/sad that nobody was looking for him - that he could have been dead for up to five days without being missed. RIP.

Sailorman was right to get a bad feeling/bad vibe: some say that there are unexplained disappearances of foreigners (especially attractive young women) but that is
the sort of scary tale that certain foreigners like to tell to give visitors to Haad Rin the creeps.

There are certainly plenty of drug/drowning deaths, often associated with magic mushrooms (not as mildly innocuous as the name suggests)

Probably got so zonked out on magic mushrooms that he decided to walk along the ocean floor collecting rocks in his backpack or something, then gradually ran out of air.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Sounds like a case of the wrong island. Who goes to "Murder Island" to commit suicide?

Which island is "Suicide Island"?

I may be going to hell in a bucket,
but at least I'm enjoying the ride.

Followup: The man is still unidentified but the contents of his backpack contained a TOOTHBRUSH. Who would take a toothbrush to go fishing or commit suicide ???
The man, believed to be a European, was found in the Gulf of Thailand about 500 metres off Chalok Lam Beach. He was found wearing only blue shorts. With him was a backpack in which police found a toothbrush, an iPhone charger and, to their surprise, five massive rocks.
