Worthless degrees here and elsewhere

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Worthless degrees here and elsewhere

Post by boozyoldman »

We have all (?) met young Cambodians simultaneously studying and working, and even a few of the richer kids who need not work.

What qualifications work well for young Cambodians?

At one time, back before the years of disaster, there were more Cambodian youngies studying classical choreography than were studying poultry husbandry*

You can have as many degrees as you like, but if that person has no '' get up and go '' , then it is worthless. I've seen people with no degrees, no education , even physical disabilities, but they get in and do something. [ The '' spastic '' ? guy that delivers the papers comes to mind .]
How many people do you know, or have heard of , have their own business and make a reasonable living from it, yet have no degree or very little education.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Where does this come from ? What do you mean ? That while there were 2 people studying classical choreography, there were no classes in "poultry husbandry" ? What are you comparing here ? Pre-KR education with today ? I am not following ...

Hard to say.

Hey boozyoldman,

My first time posting on here as I just registered. The subject of a degree can be taken lightly depending on the intentions, in my opinion. I think any form of education is good overall, whether if it's reading a ton of books or getting schooled by an underpaid teacher/professor. I'm Cambodian but from the states, however, grew up reading a library of books but never was too fond of college. Partly because school is way too expensive, but I tell my friends that if you're granted a scholarship, or you can somehow get some free schooling, then take advantage of that. Otherwise, the 21st century offers a wide variety of knowledge you can find for free. Anyone ambitious enough can find such free education by going online and visiting some legitimate websites. Hell even youtube can be informational. My point is that a degree or college can help define a person, but what type of a degree is definitely a challenge but usually left to the student to figure out his/her own ambition.
With that said, I would think any type of education/degree is important for the kids in Cambodia. I was impressed that the majority of the Cambodians there can actually speak English more so than the Thai people can. So that's a good start. But what do you mean by your first question? Qualifications for what?

Lots of youngies are doing business studies degrees and then find that their qualifications are not valued in the job market when they
apply for employment.

Nothing new here. There very few schools that care either about their students or teaching staff.
You pay your money, you pass. You teach although unqualified you get your pay. Plus most of these institutions only offer a paucity of majors so there is a surplus of unqualified applicants for any open position. Higher education is about bucks, not quality.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.
