Build it, and they will come

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Build it, and they will come

Post by Duncan »

Well let's hope so, cause there are thousands of new apartments and condo's sitting vacant, and maybe a 100, thousand in the progress of being built. I cannot see the average Cambodian wanting to live in them, even if the could afford to buy them , so I guess it's going to be left up to the 0.01 % of the billion Chinese population to immigrate to Cambodia and buy them.

Just a few examples I saw on my daily walk , for the benefit of those that don't live in PP.

Crazy isn't it? I was quite pleased they are just putting the finishing touches on the apartment block along the street from me. And then two weeks ago they suddenly started demolishing the two buildings adjacent to it, so it's all about to start again. :o

I benefit by not living in Phnom Penh.

How about posting a few photos of the buildings that are not going up in your village.

They have to. Or they have to sit hours in traffic to get to their work places in future. Also younger Khmers are much more willing to live in condos where they have gyms, offices, marts and pools with in ffew mins reach. +30yo khmers are the ones who mostly want to live in own house on own land. But the condos they are currently building in BKK, center and Koh Pich area are way too expensive for most locals. The developers have understood this now and thus some high end projects have been cancelled/delayed. And also they have started to build much more lower price condos now. But it's good for us foreigners too as apartment rents have dropped significantly in 2 years. Modern apartment with gym & pool in 2014 were $800+ / month, when now you can get $500+ / month and next year probably will drop even more when Olympia City and other bigger complexes (partly) finishes.

Sorry but no photos at all. While there are no condos as yet a lot of land along the east side of the Mekong has been purchased and walled off-perhaps for future villas. Also lots of agricultural related businesses are cropping up. And there's a campaign to uglify the shoreline in Kampong Cham with upscale hotels. I moved to rural Cambodia to escape the city and damned if it didn't follow me.
