Tablet Deal that is too good to not tell people about

Post by The_Notorious_N.E.D. »

(This is an actual Public Service Announcement of sorts, believe it or not, I get pretty excited about discount tablets.)

I know I have a somewhat worn tablet for sale currently, so it's probably stupid of me to tell you about this deal at the same time, but it's just too damn good to keep to myself. No, I am not affiliated with nor profiting from this in any way, shape, or form - I just like consumer electronics a lot.

Real simple, here we go:

BCS Computer on Kampuchea Krom

http://www.bcscomputer.net/

Google Maps Link BCS Computer = https://www.google.com.kh/maps/place/BC ... e0dfa38906

Is selling kind of an odd tablet, but it's odd in a good way ...

Kobo Arc 10 HD

10.1 inch screen with 2560x1600 resolution

2gb RAM and a 1.8ghz Nvidia Tegra 4 quadcore ...

4.2.2 Android Jellybean (with just a light Kobo skin on it that mostly has to do with reading books and the Kobo bookstore etc, it's close to pure Android right out of the box and while no custom ROMs exist for it, it can be rooted easily. I have no idea if they plan on updating it to KitKat or "L" - haven't seen it reported either way.)
Unlike a Kindle Fire you have full access to the Google Play Store and apps and it works exactly like any other Android tablet.

http://www.androidcentral.com/kobo-arc-10-hd-review

http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/20/kobo-arc10hd-review/

Those are two typical reviews where the main knock on the thing is the price, because at $400 there are a bunch of options within reaching distance that compete with it or best it in various areas. At THAT price ...

The cons? The battery life isn't bad, but merely average for a tablet with a large display (and considering that they call this a tablet for readers and even have a special Reading Mode built into the Android settings, you'd think they'd have pumped the battery up as much as they could but oh well.) Storage is limited to 16gb (with 12 available to the user out of the box) and there is no MicroSD slot or way to expand it. If you you make judicious use of "The Cloud" and delete old apps or apps that you aren't using ever I think most will find they can get by with that amount easily enough.

Aside from that, this thing benchmarks 29,000 on Antutu and few tablets get anywhere near that much less beat it. Samsung's Note 2014 beats it and I imagine their Pro and S line tablets will as well, but not much else.

It originally retailed for $400 new and about a year later it is still selling for $350 or so on average at all the usual online retailers.

BCS has them for ... wait for it ... wait ...

$235

That is one hell of a deal. Honestly. You will not get a nicer tablet brand new for that price anywhere. Tablets with a 2560x1600 display are $400 and up pretty much. The display is killer and the Tegra chip absolutely kills with 3D games and the like. A book jacket style cover that turns the screen on and off will run you an additional $20. They had about ten or a dozen of them on their shelf when I bought one the other day. I assume it's overstock because Kobo just isn't one of those brands that people flock to, even when they put out a quality product, but this is a really nice tablet at an unbeatable price.

Don't say I never did anything for you.

Damn. I might really swing by and at least check it out.

That screen is kickass!

No SIM card though, right?

I really want to find one that takes a SIM.

I was very tempted by the one you're selling, but if Ned can't SIM unlock it, I'm guessing I wouldn't be able to either.

Both seem like great deals, if it's what someone is looking for.

Damn, that's a nice screen.

Yeah, I'd say this Kobo deal is better than what I'm offering at $150 but a Note 10.1 for $150, even if it's a little beat on, isn't bad either. I just don't need it anymore since I decided that the Kobo was going to be my tablet for a while.

The screen is awesome. I had a 2560x1600 on my Note 2014, but I had to sell that because I was short on cash to renew my visa, and I've been missing that 2k resolution ever since. It really does make a difference when doing anything where a little clarity goes a long way, like reading text for instance, or watching pornography really really carefully. Like, scrutinizing it. If somebody was into that. I use my tablet for reading. Anyways ...

Check this out though: You ALWAYS have your phone on you, correct? You don't ever leave home without your Note 3 or whatever you're rocking at the moment. Correct? Well, that's got a SIM in it, you're already paying for data on it, and it can be turned into an Android 3G hotspot at the press of a button and your tablet that you saved money on because it didn't need a SIM slot can then hook up to the internet wherever you happen to be. Honestly, you're literally paying up to $100 or more extra in some cases to avoid having to touch SETTINGS --- > MOBILE DATA (or whatever) ---> TURN HOTSPOT ON.

Your mama taught you better than that.

^ LoL.

It's true. That's why they're both still very tempting offers even though I'd really want a SIM one.

I haven't joined the tablet bandwagon yet but this makes it tempting as I realize my laptop isn't as portable as I like to think it is. The only problem is that typing on a tablet sucks big time, and I'm pretty sure it would be all wobbly on my lap... Does anyone have those usb mini keyboards for tablets? How's typing on a tablet? I hate the feeling I get on my fingertips from typing on a phone. I'm assuming tablets are the same.

I've yet to figure out to hold the fuckers without feeling like I am about to drop them. My boss had me snapping pictures with her iPad the other day. It just felt clunky and stupid. I am clumsy and I think I would drop a tablet within the first week.

SQUF, you might like the 7inch versions, we both prefer them.

For anyone looking to switch from laptop to tablet as a primary device, be aware that multitasking is nowhere near the same, so if you like to switch between running apps, don't expect them to be doing much in the background - most just suspend until they have focus again.
