Pchum Ben Photos

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Pchum Ben Photos

We went to two pagodas on different days, Ream and Otres.

Someone please explain about the rice. We had a bowl of rice and many pots on the table. We put a spoonful of rice in each bowl, with an offering of money.

At Otres- we arrived a bit later and sat with the monks while they ate. The amount of food was staggering.

The rice in the bowls is to feed those souls who haven't passed through to the other side for whatever reason.

actually 15 days before the pchum ben holiday starts, the monks already started praying and they cannot leave the pagoda to go collect alms, so the nearby villagers have to take turn to bring food to the pagoda for the monks, what got me in stitches is that there are sequence to follow, so that everyday will have somebody to provide food for the monks, i wish other infrastructure can be as organised as this.
