Prime Minister HE again appealed to bus companies and taxi drivers not to inflate fare prices during the upcoming Pchum Ben festival, a request that has gone unheeded for years.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony of University of Puthisastra students at the Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel yesterday, Mr. HE said: “I strongly hope that for Pchum Ben this year, the taxi and bus prices will not increase. I have always appealed, but they never listen and people do not have a bus or car, so they decide to accept [the price hike].”

He also urged all drivers to be careful on the roads and to abide by traffic laws to avoid any accidents.

Government officials regularly appeal to taxi drivers and bus companies not to hike prices during traditional festivals and major national holidays, but their pleas often fall on deaf ears, resulting in criticism from commuters.

Capitol bus company’s assistant to the CEO Hour Kok Ouy declined to comment on whether the company planned to increase its fares during the Pchum Ben festival, saying instead that it was the decision of the company’s leaders...
