Very interesting parallels

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Very interesting parallels

Deja vu but possibly also with a bad outcome like at that time? The other day in the CD - interesting analysis.

One thing for sure, even when we know our past history we learn very little from it, and the mistakes we made in the past, will be the same mistakes we make in the future.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

This is probably the best short summary of Cambodia's recent past which is easily accessible.

That Sihanouk was a mean, capricious and cruel despot is beyond dispute; for various reasons, the
current regime has chosen to airbrush most of the more distressing episodes of Sihanouk's years of power
out of existence and to represent the Sihanouk era as a lost golden age. In any case, those Cambodians who
have an adult memory of the years before 1970 are now in their sixties.

According to some writers, Sihanouk was still in his 'chaud lapin' phase when he encountered the
lovely and enchanting Monique Izzi at a fashion show or beauty pageant (accounts vary.)
Startled by his ill-disguised intentions, Monique fled to the bosom of her mama only to be sternly
ordered back to Chamkar Mon to do her duty and rescue the family from the genteel poverty into
which it had sunk in the years since Monique's father was killed in the World War.

Suffice it to say that Monique, a Eurasian and a commoner, triumphed over all her rivals and the
serene matronly countenance of the Queen Mother is now to be seen wherever one looks.

Very good piece. Nothing really new, but a good summary and draws nice historical parallels.
