Sihanoukville Beach Vendors Oppose Government Relocation Plan

BY PHAN SOUMY | SEPTEMBER 9, 2016

Dozens of vendors on Sihanoukville’s popular O’Chheuteal Beach are opposing a government plan to relocate them to smaller stalls further from the water’s edge as part of an effort to beautify another stretch of coastline before this year’s Sea Festival.

Preah Sihanouk provincial governor Yun Min said the 46 vendors were notified of the government’s development proposal last week by officials who presented them with floor plans showing smaller stalls they would need to build before the annual event in December.

The barang end of the beach is vastly improved by the new works. But it cost lessees about 20K each for the new structures I was told. Poor Khmer vendors will not pay this.

Sihanoukville beach vendors protest new relocation notice
Tue, 13 September 2016
Khouth Sophak Chakrya

Vendors along O’Chheuteal Beach yesterday protested against a new Preah Sihanouk provincial project that requires them to build new stalls – set back from their current ones – before the Sea Festival starts on December 17, in order to expand the beach area for tourists.

Vendor Yu Vesna, 37, said provincial authorities gave them a deadline to transfer to their new stalls before the festivities.

Under the project, part of an ongoing effort to regulate local beaches, vendors can build new stalls measuring 8 metres by 20 metres. If vendors don’t begin to transfer to their new stalls by November, authorities will take measures to dismantle their current stalls, Vesna said.

However, he added, “Two months to complete the construction is too quick for us.”

It's most likely to keep the Chinese invaders appeased. I expect the shitty Chinese designed stalls will nearly all be doing the food only they can eat!
