They are a nightmare and steer clear of them here if you can. I had an old one from the 70's years ago. It somehow survived all the troubles and changed hands from the US Mil to the Vietnamese and then on to me in the 90's. Nothing was original but it did come with two bullet holes which is why i brought it I think. Problem was the engine was utter crap and the brakes were even worst. I ended up giving it away as it was a deathtrap and an accident waiting to happen.

I like like the ones in "Rat Patrol", with the mounted 50 cal. What a breeze through traffic that would be.

That's becoming the clear picture, Gary. My first 4WD was a Suzuki knockoff of the Willy's and the kid in me has always wanted the real thing. Growing up watching the A Team didn't help. They "can" be I suppose, especially if you get one of those fancy new ones that's more minivan than jeep... but a proper YJ/TJ model is a real monster. get the 6 cyl with the manual tranny, put a real suspension under it, chop the fenders for some clearance, maybe a couple of inches of body lift, proper tires...
they're monsters that can't be stopped.
i had a car in front of me lose control in the snow on the highway one day on my way to work... slammed my brakes and did my own skid to avoid them and ended up in the guard rail. jeep bounced off the guardrail 4 times... i got out, closed the door that popped open, started it back up, and drove off. (to a hospital because i'd just slammed my head on the dash hard enough to crack the dash and break my nose when the belt didn't engage...)

I've had two Landmonster(cruisers) My present '93 (rare with 5-speed manual and carb) and years ago a 1969 Landcruiser with a 330hp 327cu. in. Chev engine and very wide tundra style tires.(in Alaska) (with the steering on the '69 it was a little dangerous to drive at speed) I love my '93 and wouldn't trade it for a newer one as it has no computer, is simple to work on and the big old 6 cyl is just about bullet proof. I've replaced every bearing under the truck and sent to America for a limited-slip rearend.
I love it when the Cambo drivers around town come over into my lane (seemingly for no reason.) I go over into their lane and they freak out. You want crazy driving? I'll give you crazy driving. (I also had a big truck airhorn installed.) You got to love the weight of the Landmonster and they put that brush guard on the front for a reason. I wish they had "V" snow plows here as I would install one.

Agreed that wranglers are beasts. The pussy jeeps are the liberties. Wranglers are great. Good in mud, ice/snow etc. Not the best in snow but good overall. I know guys who take them off-road all the time and they perform great. Plus, being able to remove the top or doors is cool (albeit a pain in the ass).

yeah, that's the one thing I hated about mine was the pain in the ass of having to put them back because of rain/etc. the doors were pretty easy, just drop them in. but the soft top was a real hassle, especially to older ones as they don't stretch as easy and the tracks for them get screwed up.Bitte_Kein_Lexus wrote:Agreed that wranglers are beasts.
